Mostly in the last few months I have used my G0800 beast for turning. Actually, the side of the shop where my G0766 sits has been stacked up, and before I could use the 0766, I would have a lot of moving things around. Well, the other day, I noticed some rust beginning to form on the ways of the 0766, due to condensation, where I warm the shop, and the metal is cold. I decided to do something about it, and moved the necessary clutter, cleaned the ways, and decided tho use the 22x42 for my next project. [continued]
I was in the shop for most of the day yesterday, and that G0766 was so smooth and powerful, giving solid performance, and was a pleasure to turn on. That new potentiometer I put on it, was smooth as silk, and the whole turning experience was just superb. The G0800 is a heavier lathe, and although smooth, one knows it when adjusting the banjo or tailstock. The G0766 was also smooth, but lighter in weight, and yet plenty stable. I got a renewed appreciation for the G0766. When I get the project finished I'll post a pic. Btw, Chris Ramsey put me on to a wonderful oil based cleaner that is the bomb for cleaning and protecting the lathe ways, and is superb for cleaning chucks too. It is Champion's Stainless Steel Cleaner. I got 3 spray cans from Amazon.com. Superb, and easy to use! [con't. 1000 character limit]
The two chucks I have cleaned, look new now, and I will probably clean all 9 of my chucks over the next few months as I use them. Btw, even though it says Stainless Steel cleaner, its great for all cast iron, and other metals.
I know about the piles of stuff. I've been in the shop reorganizing mode for the last month. Running new electrical outlets, moving tool locations and building storage racks and a new lathe tool rack etc. Most of my big tools are on wheels so I can move them around but that creates its own problems. My G0766 is in a good location and its staying put. The next project is building cabinets for the miter saw station and rebuilding my assembly table. My basement shop is climate controlled so I don't have much rust problem. I do use Johnson's paste wax on the cast iron tool beds. So far, so good.
It has been a long time since I have posted here. I sold my house a year and a half ago and had to put all my tools in storage while the new place was being built. I finally got the Lathe out of storage this week and realized that my efforts to rust proof the ways while in storage we not very successful. So I need to get the solvent and scotch brite out and clean them up before I can use it. But it feels good to have my tools back.
Great news, Scott!
I too love my 0766 -- so much so that I'm hoping to find a second one to put in the new shop I'm building in the Texas Hill Country! (It's slow going, as we're only there a week or so per month right now). If I can't find one needing a new home, I'll probably break down and, with agreement by SWMBO, buy a new one! That way, whichever shop I'm in, I'll have a wonderful lathe!
Sounds like a great plan Walter!
Good to hear. My G0766 is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow! David
Congrats on your G0766, David! You will find out you made a great decision! The G0766 is the best value for a large, full featured lathe on the market today. 3 hp motor, advanced “M” series Delta inverter, 22” swing. There are lathes that have tailstock pendants but are way more expensive. The G0766 gets the major things right, for a great value. Mine has been a superb unit for performance.
