Here's a G0766 Mod

    Hello All,

I just posted a couple of pictures of a mod I made so I will explain it here. Seems every time I take pictures with my iPhone and upload them they never end up in the correct orientation and this time is not exception. It will help you find them easily

Background: I had several other lathes in my life and they all had a separate direction switch and a separate on/off switch. I was use to that and just hated the single rotary switch that Grizzly used for both on the G0766. Yes it has a main power switch but that is used for a different purpose.

So being I am way better at electronics than woodworking I had to modify the lathe to be the way I wanted. Basically the same as most other high end lathes. If you have played with a PM3520B or any Jet lathe you will understand what I am talking about. It turned out to be very simple to do from a electrical standpoint. Getting everything to fit was a different story but very doable.

A requirement was it had to be easily undone and returned to factory. That was accomplished also. I ordered a extra plastic face plate and plastic box that the switches are in. This allows me to return to factory. All wires were connected using the stock connectors on the factory wires. None were cut, soldered on, or modified in any way.

It turns out that the rotary switch used to stop or change directions on the lathe is an overkill for what it's being used as. They only use a small portion of the switch that id equivalent to a SPDT switch. I have no idea why they used a expensive switch in place of a inexpensive one. If you are not familiar with the kinds of switches I referred to I suggest you do not do this mod without help. So looking at the wiring diagram I uploaded you will see you remove all 3 wires going to the rotary switch and hook 2 of the wires to the SPDT switch.

The white wire is the Forward wire and the Black wire is the Reverse wire. The red wire is the Common (HOT) wire which will now go to a SPST on/off switch. You can attach the red wire to either terminal on the switch. You will run a new wire from the other terminal to the middle (leftover) terminal of the direct switch you already hooked the white and black wires to. It will usually go to the middle terminal which is the common terminal. Like I said you really need to understand the basic wiring of a SPDT and a SPST switch to do this mod.

That's all from an electrical standpoint. Next is putting the switches on the panel and making sure they fit in the box.

    Part 4.

I removed the rotary switch and put the on/off switch there. I used a Shopfox Paddle switch (SPST) that you can but off Grizziy or Amazon. You have to cut out a square to mount it in where the rtary switch was. Then to the left of that switch I drilled a new hole and mounted the direction switch there. That all worked fine until I tried to mount the front panel back in the plastic box it was attached to. The On/Off paddle switch would fit. I ended up having to mount the paddle switch upside down and trim a little of the plastic box. Now you see why I needed both an extra panel and box on hand if I ever want to undo the mod. A little more planning on the placement would have avoided this problem but it was too late at that point. I would have liked the switch mounted right side up but it works just fine as it is. I may redo it some day.

Who came up with this 1000 limit?

Operation is now like most other lathes on the market. I will assume at this point you can see the advantage of being able to stop the lathe quickly without having to kill the power to the lathe and having to reset the speed control to get the lathe going again. Now you can make the lathe stop and easily start it again without resetting the speed.

Let me say this so we don't start a debate. You can start and stop the lathe in the stock configuration but it requires turning a switch. That is what I did not like. There are times when you might be parting off a part and need to quickly stop the lathe. It's a lot easier to push a paddle than turn their rotary switch. If you disagree then you probably don't need this mod.

    Remote ON/OFF switch

I have shown you on the wiring diagram that all that is needed is another SPST switch placed in series with the other switch you added. Just place it in series with other switch's red wire. Both switches need to be in the on position for the lathe to run. Either can stop it.

That's my mod but there is more for those that don't want to do this mod but just want a remote switch. Read on..

So you like the lathe like it is from the factory EXCEPT you want a remote on/off kill switch. That's easy also. Note where the red wire is connected to the rotary switch. Disconnect the wire from that terminal. Get something like a old extension cord and cut it to the length you need to reach the other end of the lathe. You will only use 2 of the wires in the cord. You choice which ones. Twist one of the wires to the red wire you just removed and tape it up or put a wire nut on it. Then put the other wire on the terminal on the rotary switch where you took off the red wire. On the other end of that extension cord, on the same 2 wires you used on the other end place a SPST switch. That is now your new remote on/off switch. I'll let the mechanics of a box and routing the wire to you.

    Summary.

I hope this helps someone out there. Even if you are happy with the way the factory designed things I hope this provided some good information.

If you want to take it a step further and put the speed control remote with the on/off switch we can discuss how to do that.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for the write-up Harold. I'm really interested in the remote kill switch. There's been several times I've needed one. I've thought about having a pot in the remote but that would require a switch to select the pot. That's starting to get complicated and I don't know that I would actually use it that much. The remote Kill switch is definitely worth having. Now I just need to find a magnetically attached dust proof box and a large kill switch that I like.

if you look on YouTube there is a guy who made a remote switch for a 3520. He used and outdoor box with an outdoor switch mounted in it. Then he bought a big round magnet that was mounted on the bottom of the box.

As I showed just adding the remote kill only is very simple to do. Let me know if you have any questions.
