I was given an alert from someone who had been wanting to purchase the G0800 lathe. I checked in with the Grizzly website, and sure enough, it has been discontinued. What a shame, as the G0800 is a premium lathe, and quality built. I wonder what or if they plan to replace with something of equal or better quality....perhaps a newer model with more features?
That's surprising. My impression was that it was a very good lathe. As a suggestion, you may want to consider buying a few spare parts of unique items that may eventually wear out/fail - - like some of the electrical switches, etc. For my G0766 I have spare potentiometers, the Fwd-reverse switch, and the master on-off switch. Maybe I'll never use them but they were surprisingly inexpensive.
I'm a little surprised too. The G0800 is for the serious turner or professional. Perhaps when you get into the price range of those high end lathes, people are willing to spend a little more for the name, like Robust, Oneway, Powermatic. Just trying to come up with a reason.
Maybe a newer model on the same platform with added tailstock pendant & other bells & whistles?
The Shop Fox version of this lathe (W1866) is still listed on the Grizzly website. They have it list at $3,795, which sounds like a discounted price.
Yep, I saw that on the Shop Fox...no swing away tailstock on the SF. That was one of the reasons I went with the G0800.
Roger, speaking of the swing away tailstock, How often do you actually use that feature? Unless you're turning off the end of the lathe, I don't see any advantages. Just curious.
I use it occasionally, mostly because I am a bit cramped up on space in my current shop. When I move to a bigger shop, I will use it on most bowls and hollowforms as turning off the end can help save on the back strain.
