I was going thru and making sure all the set screws are tight on my new lathe. They were all lose!

When I tighten the screw on the wheel that operates the Quill the wheel will no longer turn. So I took things apart to see what is going on. What I found is the wheel is now tight up against the tail stock keeping it from turning. So either the casting has a little too much metal or the hole in the lead screw that the set screw seats in is off a little. I suspect the latter. I did move the wheel to another spot on the shaft and tighten it down in the proper place and all is well except I doubt it will stay there.

So I see two options. I can take a shot and drill another seat where the new set screw has made a mark or I can file/grind a flat spot on the shaft. Maybe use a touch of lock tight. I am leaning on making a flat spot.

Anyone else see this before? What did you do?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Just found a YouTube video of a guy replacing his quill. His new lead screw didn't have anything on it for the set screw to seat in so maybe I don't need to do anything other that what I have already done. Just tighten it up in a new spot on the shaft.

There is a little indention drilled into the quill for the set screw to seat into, and it does make the handwheel tight up against the tailstock casing. you can back off the screw a little and it will be fine...perhaps a full turn. also, a little WD-40 sprayed into that area where the handwheel rides against the housing will be good. Trust me, it is not a problem. Also, if it really bothers you, if you have a drill press and can securely position the lead screw housing, then take it out, take a drill bit and just drill another indention into it right beside the other one........be careful, have a sharp bit, and use precision, with light tap of the bit against the lead screw housing.
