I waited until the last day of the sale to order my lathe. My plan was to order it and go get it if possible in Springfield. I am tired of being inside and thought a drive was in order. So I started at 8 am this morning trying to call Grizzly and place my order. Lost cause. I tried all day and kept getting a recording about the pandemic and long wait times.

So I finally gave up and ordered online with shipping. Guess I'll have to wait. While it's in stock I have a feeling I am in for a long wait.

Now I have time to decide what chuck to buy. I currently use a Oneway Talon on my Delta Midi. So either a stronghold or try something different. Any suggestions?

I think that your Midi has a 1" x 8 tpi spindle. So, I would start with buying an adapter: 1-1/4 x8 to 1" x 8 tpi. There are a number of companies that sell this adapter. Griz sells two: one for under $15 and another for around $35. I bought the cheap one and found that the run out was virtually immeasurable w/o a dial indicator.

So, with the adapter, you can re-use your existing chuck, faceplates, etc. There is nothing wrong with eventually getting a 1-1/4 x 8 chuck to supplement your existing accessories.

I actually bought the Griz 5" chuck kit (1x8) because I wanted a nice sized Cole jaw set, and two sets of other jaws and a screw adapter, etc. I thought that it was a good value for the money. I liked it so much that I bought a second one.

    Brice,

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know they made that adapter. I think I will pick one up and use what I have for now. It will be a while before I turn something really big but still interested in what others are using for larger chucks.

I have Vicmarc 120 and Nova SN2 and Titan chucks. The Vicmarc is premium, but the Nova's are still very high quality and far more affordable. I think the SuperNova 2 is the sweet spot for general use. You would only need bigger for large bowls or long hollow forms. I only have 1 SN2 but 2 more are on my wish list. For big turnings, I think Vicmarc or Oneway are the way to go. The jaws are much thicker than most others.

I just got an email from Grizzly and they are extending the 10% off sale thru the end of April and now offering $25 shipping on all machines. That should put the cost of your G0766 at $2,075 + sales tax. That's a good deal. You will love the G0766.

I have a Oneway Stronghold chuck with #2 and #3 jaws. I use it for bigger bowls. My go to chuck for "normal size" stuff is the Record Power chuck with the 50mm jaws. The Record Power jaws are interchangeable with the Nova jaws. I think any of the Nova, Vicmark, Oneway, Record Power or Grizzly chucks will work just fine.

    Hey Robert,

I did notice the $25 shipping but the G0766 still shows the normal shipping. They haven't processed my order yet so I am going to give them a call as soon as they open.

    Thanks,

    Harold

Congrats on your G0766......you'll have it in a few days. Grizzly usually does great with shipping. The only thing is that they have to deal with whatever the carrier has going on. They normally use UPS Freight, and you can get lift gate service for a few dollars extra.

I did order the lift gate. I am on a corner lot with the garage in the back so mine is a real easy unload. BTW Roger, I looked at your site. Very nice turnings. I wish I was that good.

    Robert,

Thanks again for the heads up. I just got off the phone with Grizzly and they took $150 off my order. That was a nice surprise. She also said it would probably ship today!

    Harold,
Glad you called them. Every $150 bucks counts. The 10% off sale prices are listed on the Grizzly website. I'm jealous, I had to wait two months for my lathe to come in last Summer. Waiting on a slow boat from China is hard.
