Tailstock Quill Binding

    Hello all,

I have a four year old G0766 and recently started some projects (travel mugs) requiring boring while on the lathe.

What I am encountering is that all is fine while advancing the quill into the workpiece, but the handwheel is binding/becoming very difficult to turn (takes two hands and grunting) when I retract. I notice that when advancing the quill, the leadscrew rod "backs up" a bit, leaving about 3/16 inch space between the tailstock casting and the handwheel, but when I retract the quill, the leadscrew rod pulls the handwheel against the tailstock casting - not tightly (wheel against casting is not what is making retraction difficult), but firmly.

I have disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, verified the set screw on the handwheel is seating correctly, and also verified that at least according to the parts list there isn't anything missing from the quill assembly.

Anyone else encounter? Have a fix?

    Thanks in advance!

My G0766 still works like new and my unit was probably in the first 5 ever shipped out to customers. Since you have cleaned and lubed everything, one would think all would be well. One thing, heavy drilling on larger items like travel mugs might induce extra stress on the threads themselves. Have you taken a good look at the threads on the quill? If they are okay, then perhaps shine a light in the quill housing, and see if there are any burrs or galling that might interfere with the screw backing out properly. Otherwise, a call to Grizzly tech support might be in order.

Thanks Roger - I had found the problem, and it was a galling issue of a sort - on the edge of the keyway that the quill lock travels in, a very slight backward facing bump formed - it would slide forward, but would bite into the casting tube when moving backward. I polished it out and at the same time softened the kinife-sharp edges of the whole keyway with a RO sander and some 400 grit paper.

Glad you got it figured out and fixed John! Sometimes, things can get out of alignment and we don’t realize they have, and it will cause an issue to develop. Thanks for posting this here....it might help another owner of the 0766 at a later date!
