We’ve had a few new members in the last 3 months, so if you are new to the group, take a minute and post an introduction of yourself....what lathe you are using, what types of forms you like to do, etc.

Roger, I'm surprised that none of the new members are introducing themselves. So, I thought that I would make this post to see if it might stimulate one of the new comers.

I'm curious to know if these new members had a lathe previous to their Green (or black) Monster? If so, what was it.

My guess is that most of the lathes sold in the last couple of years are pretty solid in terms of reliability.

Thanks for the backup Brice! We have a few new join, and I wanted to acknowledge their participation, and hope they will take advantage of the good information on this corner of sawmill creek.

This is slightly off topic, but related to my G0776, which I originally bought - - partially on the information that I got from this group.

The other day I was turning a rought piece that I had only knocked the corners off with a chainsaw. It was off balance but I didn't notice any significant vibration. I have some wooden boxes on the shelf under the lathe that are filled with play sand. When I first set up the lathe, I would get some vibration on a similar piece. But now it seemed to be much much less. I am suspecting that if my observation is accurate that the sand in the wooden boxes may have settled after a few hundred hours of use. I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that their Griz lathe vibration has dropped over time?

I do think machines “settle” into a normalized operating condition. I do know there have been some harmonics reduced/eliminated when a turner who was having vibration issues, simply backed off the screws that hold the legs to the bed, and run it for a project or two, and it seems to settle and allow for the lathe to find its equilibrium. That allows for any torque induced in the assembly to settle out, and of course after the couple of projects or so, retighten and things are better. I have advised a few turners along the way to do this with their unit, and reports are that it helped. No doubt it could also allow sand to settle in, and reduce vibration.

GO766 in the shop! A New wood turner but loving the power of this new lathe! I went to a garage sale, it has been a constant assault on my bank account every since. Lathe number three in less than a year.

Bobby, first of all welcome to the GGMG! I think you’ll likely be able to slow down on your lathe purchases now, since you got your G0766, as that lathe [I also have it in my shop, one of 3] will do most anything you want. Power, Performance and features, as well as the best value out there for a larger lathe. Does yours have the 25mm toolrest post and hole in the banjo, or the 1 inch diameter? We have threads here on the GGMG to show you things about how to make everything fit.....just let us know, and we can help!
