I have a question for the guys here that have a Grizzly lathe. I have a question about the curved bowl toolrests? Some of the rests I have found only have a 5 inch post which would put me well below the center of the bowl. What are some of the tests you have that are the correct heights for the 0766 (22” swing) model lathe and the 0733 (18” swing) model.

You can get any style tool rest you need for your Grizzly from Robust tools in Barneveld Wis. Check them out. Custom sizes are no issue and reasonable priced.

Weston, Roger has posted the correct length for the tool post a few times. Here is a link to a recent discussion:

8.75" total height.....top of rail where the gouge rides down to the bottom of the post, inclusive. You won't regret getting the Robust rests, and is your banjo hole 1" diameter? The 8.75" is considered a "custom rest" but it is nearly the same price as their long post rest, which is about 1.5" less post. You need to call Robust and speak with Brent English. He made mine for me about 3 years ago, and they are perfect for both my G0766 and my G0800.

I got my lathe last year before the tariffs. It was also right at the time of the switch to 1” rests. I assume mine is 1” ... my caliper says .94ish (can’t remember off the top of my head but don’t know what the other size was on older models. I bought a 1” rest with the option idea to take it back if it doesn’t work. It fits but is too short. The guy at woodcraft said I could get a double but adapter or something to raise the height. I dont really love this option and idea so I wanted to ask you guys.

    Weston,

The original G0766 lathes were first shipped starting spring 2015 and came with 25 mm posts. They also came with a somewhat short banjo: 11-1/2" long and 5" high. There were complaints. Griz started shipping a kit around Dec 2015 with a longer banjo: 17" and 4-1/2 inches tall. All of these came with 25 mm tool posts and banjos drilled to around 25 mm (0.9843").

    Part 2 (continued):

Then around Feb (roughly) of 2016 people reported being shipped a banjo with a 1.00" hole and (presumably) a matching tool post. Perhaps I'm off by a year (other GGMC please jump in here). In the US the standard post is 1.00". So, the solution was to buy a $15 Black and Deming 1" dia. drill and drill the hole out by a few thousandths. It is an easy project for most people if done in a drill press with a little care and a slower speed (a cutting oil isn't needed but doesn't hurt). Some people with skill and a little finesse have done it with a hand drill. After drilling the hole to 1", most people found that they needed to sand it a few thou more. I turned a spindle of wood about 7/8 inch dia with a neck of about 1/2" (so that it would fit the drill) and wrapped sandpaper around it. Voila - - 2 minutes later everything fit great.

Your recollection of the number doesn't make a lot of sense as it is neither 1" or 25 mm equiv. Recheck before you order.

BTW, Roger's number of 8-3/4" works fine for the G0766. I've made a bunch of tool rests and I measured mine and some are about 1/4" longer. Maybe some day I'll cut off a quarter inch but so far it hasn't caused me any issues. I have a HF horizontal metal cutting bandsaw, so cutting a bit off of the tool rest is about a 1 or 2 minute job.
