Conversation Between Van Huskey and Weston Houck

  1. Van ... I plan on taking your advice and getting the Laguna 1412 next week when it goes on sale for Black Friday. One thing I didn’t get to ask was about blades cause I know that doesn’t come with a blade. My main use will be cutting bowl blanks and cutting some maybe 12” wide logs into small boards 5/4 or something. I’m a noob in relation to the terms. Would you consider both those”restating”? I also ran across your thread on bandsaw blades but didn’t really see where you recommended for type of saw work. If you don’t mind would you recommend say 3-4 blades for what I plan on using them for? Maybe general size and what it’s made of... I don’t mind spending a little money if I get good results. I know I read the Laguna can be resharrpened. Any advice would be great. Last thing do you set your saw up any special way or just how factory says to? I know I have seen a lot about the “Snodgrass” way. Like I said I’m a noob.

  3. Given what I’d use it for. The new Jet does have 2 ports for dust collection but not sure if that’s a big selling point. I have 220 in my shop for the lathe and that’s my only plug... I could prob hook up another 220 but was leaning towards 110/115 plugin. Sorry if long winded but wanted to pick your brain sincerely you seem to have a lot of experience with Bandsaws. I would appreciate any input you are willing to share.

  4. Van Huskey, I was looking through several threads and you seem to best extremely knowledgeable about bandsaws. I am not. I own a little 9” ryobi one from a big box store. I am primarily into woodturning and would like something to cut and prep blanks. I have a chainsaw and what not but find it more difficult than I’d prefer especially on smaller stuff but that is still too big for my cheap one. I would like to see if you could make a few recommendations. My budget is say $1000 give or take $100. I own a Grizzly G0766 lathe capable of turning 22” bowls. Saying this to say I’m not against getting a grizzly bs if it’s a quality one. I live in SC and saw a fairly new 0457 bs on Craigslist for $900. Not sure if this is too good to pass up. I also am looking at grizzly 17” anniversary saw, the Laguna 1412, Rikon 10-336, and a new Jet 14 something cant recall the number but it’s apparently new. Is there a certain feature I should be looking for?
