    The alternating grain pattern is not only prone to tear out - it's "fault line" for splitting.

    I had good results smoothing with a Sandvik carbide scraper at 90 degrees to the grain followed by automotive wet/dry fine sandpaper. Planing with the grain was a nightmare.

    If you can provide some backing to panels with plywood, it should last through casual use.
