The red oak bedroom suit

Rate this Entry
I thought that I would take this opportunity to show some pictures of some furniture projects that I have done over the years. I decided to post an essay of pictures surrounding the bedroom suit that I built a number of years ago. Constructed of red oak, which is I guess my favorite medium in wood, the entire set took maybe a year and a half to complete….maybe two years in total, I forget really. The first picture here represents the first and last piece of the set. I started with the hutch and ended with a nice armoire style dresser for myself. I like this style and designed this one for myself as a reward for building the entire set. The top two doors open to reveal an opening on the right hand side for my ever being delivered racing newspapers and racing and woodworking magazines. That side also includes storage for some socks and other clothing. The other side offers a single drawer as well as an open area for various things such as a hair brush, a change holder and some pictures of my lovely wife and our son and whatever else accumulates daily.

The following picture shows the bed and the two matching nightstands that I built. Not a very good picture and it does not really represent the way they are these days, but you get the idea.

The next to last project for the bedroom was this dresser for my wife. I offered to make it a bit more fancier with individual compartments for socks and things like that, but she just wanted plain drawers and that was no problem. I added the mirror and the design for its styling I copied from an article in one of my woodworking mags.

I finished up the project with some shutters for our bedroom windows. Our bedroom is on the first floor of our home, so the privacy they afforded was appreciated! They were built from a jig designed by none other than Norm Abram of New Yankee Workshop fame.
