This nut is stripped and I need a new one. It is a 1/4-28 left hand thread and comes from a Stanley plane.

Does anyone know where I can get one?

I see them all the time on eBay, last completed auction looks like they went for about $4 including shipping.

Someone closer to your location may chime in before I can find mine. I know there are a bunch of them in my shop, but everything is kind of a mess still from moving.

I do not get to town often, but I could send it for packing & postage when I find them.

All the spares in my possession are the 1 inch size. Is that the size you need? I bought a bunch of the larger size because that is what I prefer even on my older planes.

Try Bob Kaune at: http://www.antique-used-tools.com/comparts.htm (http://www.antique-used-tools.com/comparts.htm) this will be an original part off of an old plane.
St. James Bay Tool Co. also sells Stanley replacement parts, http://www.stjamesbaytoolco.com/ (http://www.stjamesbaytoolco.com/)

I don't have the websites, but they should be easy enough to find

Walt Quadrato at Brass City Records (and old tools): http://www.brasscityrecords.com/. Good prices. I recommend phoning over e-mailing.

Clarence Blanchard at the Fine Tool Journal: http://www.finetoolj.com/. Very responsive to e-mail, good prices.

By the way, unless you're trying for a true-to-original plane, if you can get the larger diameter nut, do - it's far more efficient in use.

Thanks for the all of the replies. I'll check those websites. This is a 1 inch nut but the plane will accept either a 1 or 1-1/4 inch nut.

That is why almost all of my planes have the 1-1/4 inch nut. It is easier to turn while in use.

My older planes have right hand threads, so the larger nut is not an option.

BTW, I found my stash of parts in the shop last night. When I checked, it seems mine are 24 tpi. Is it possible you have a different frog? If the shaft is 28 tpi, it may be something other than a Stanley frog. I have seen this happen quite often.

They and other parts are available from Stanley at:

I just got some thumb screws for a spokeshave and they fit perfectly.

I recently bought a kit of parts for planes from Stanley. I thought it was a great deal for $10.
