stained wood?

i made some cutting boards, and the hard maple produced some weird black stains after cutting. it almost looks like a water stain, but i sanded and planed it with no luck.
the board is made now, so not much i can do, but, id love to know what it is..

i know a pic is worth a thousand words, so ill get one up asap..

Could it be a burn? Maple will burn at the drop of a hat and it is hard to get it out sometimes.

I'll revisit when a pic is up but another thing it could be is mineral stains in the wood itself.
