I originally posted this yesterday in the Neanderthal area. But I would like a few more opinions. Some people who know a lot more about wood than me gave me varying opinions. I would like to get a few more before I spend money. Would you mind looking at the wood below and telling me what you think?

I saw tthe wood below in Texas last year. Look at the shelves. For my 1st real project, I want to try something like this. These shelves were 2" thick finished. So I figured he started with 10 or 12/4. The shelves went for about $2k each and the desk about $5k. The surface looked distressed.

Thoughts on the type or types of wood?

If it is Mesquite I am in trouble. Getting Mesquite to OR is not a simple task. What type of wood could be substituted if it is some exotic SW wood?

Thanks

Honestly, with pictures that small (or maybe I mean zoomed out?) and wood stained that dark it could be almost anything. Do you have any more info and more close up photos?

As to thickness I would source 8/4 rough and thickness it to as thick as possible and not bother blowing 1/2" thickness per board into the planer. If its a custom piece you are making does an exact 2" matter, or can you get by with 1 7/8", or maybe 1 15/16"?

Thanks guys

but if you were going to make something like that, and you wanted it to look like that, from your best judgement, what wood would you use?

PS - I am going back to TX in late Jan. I will look at more details of the peices. :D

Looks a little like one of the pines to me, due to the knots, and figure. Maybe ponderosa? That would make it easy to source. I agree with the others though, next to impossible to tell from the photos.
