Wishing everyone a Very Merry Christmas and hopefully you find the time to build something from the shop for a child in need at christmas time.......I will post pic's of a 6 piece wooden train I am almost done with to be given away to a child that will not have much of a christmas. God Bless to All!!:)

great looking candle holders Jim, care to give any detail of how you made those? specifically the legs? Thanks

Jim Fox
12-23-2008, 9:56 AM
Basically there is a dado in the base that accepts the legs. Then there is a dado in the legs that is the height of the base material, they overlap each other. You make a blank for the legs, long enough that they cover 2 legs each. Then you cut the dadoes out, cut the angled ends, then cut then to size.

Thanks for the compliments, I actually surprised myself how it came out. Those ebony caps weren't originally supposed to be there. The plan was wedged through tenons, but I guess I need to practice those mortises a little more. Blowout city.

I made a "magic wine bottle holder," a bandsaw box (3 of those), and a pen box (2 of those). The wine holder is cocobolo. The bandsaw box is cherry and poplar. The pen box is cherry and padauk. The paduak is a single piece 6"x6"x3" that was bandsawn. Also the padauk has sapwood in the front which I thought had nice character. Pics in the order as listed above.

Two magic wands (cherry...Rockler was fresh out of phoenix feathers and unicorn hairs, so no cores) for my Harry Potter-obsessed kids and a wooden sword (ash and cherry) for my son. I know, no pics so they don't exist, but my kids will be OK with them anyway. Merry Christmas everyone!

I whipped these 3 cutting boards out at the last minute. I finshed them with mineral oil and parafin wax, it worked real good. I also made a book shelf for my little boy. He is taking a nap right now so no pictues at the moment. I know no pictures it didn't happen, I will post later.

I'm pretty new to wood working even though I've been in construction for most of my life. I've decided to make cutting boards for the family for Christmas, and us that as my introduction to wood working. Please let me know what you think of my designs. The Halibut and round boards are padauk, the laminated board is padauk and maple, and the other is purple heart. the laminated board is my first glue up job, and was a fun learning experience.

The halibut is 26" long, the round board is 14" in diameter, the organic shaped board is 24" long, and the laminated board is 14.5" x 13".

Merry Christmas to all.

Here is the book shelf it is simple, but I wanted it to be short and stout so her couldn't pull it over. As a daily ritual he cleaned if out again today. I was going to make it with glass doors, but I wanted him to be able to get at the books. It is a lose lose situation.

It's a game called Pegs and Jokers. Unfortunately, the lighting is really bad and you can't see the walnut pieces.

I didn't build anything, instead, I completely re-tooled my shop. New (to me) TS, and shaper, and I got a brand new BS. So my projects have revolved around tuning up equipment, wiring for 220, and I am getting ready to install some florescent lighting.

That isn't my favorite part of the hobby, but I felt like it was time to really put my shop together. So next year, I will be ready:D

I'm even farther behind than Jacob. My shop is still in the "construction stage" and won't be ready for me to move in until perhaps spring. This Christmas I couldn't make anything, but thanks to many here on Sawmill Creek, I have some great ideas for next year.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Hi Jason,

Yes these are from plans that I purchased several years ago from plansnow.....the link is below. I have built several of these and only altered the plan on one, it really is a nice project. This one is actually for the wife..........since the other ones were built to sell, I told her this one was for a customer and stuck it in our store to hold it for them for christmas........:D. Should have seen her eyes tonight when we brought it in and I told her it was for her all along. I have sold all the rest and she really wanted one, so this was her's!

The sides and bottom are oak, with a Tzalam top and keys. Finish is BLO covered by 1 coat of amber shellac.

Finished photo's of the last 4 projects, and I had to post one from the LOML. She done a mermaid & sea stained glass effect in an old window, it is gorgeous. The picture does not do it justice I will try to get a better shot of it, the colors are amazing. She also did the glass on the back of the make-up table that I made from an old door.

I already posted the tall hutch, here is the small rustic chest with rope handles and notched feet.

James, you probably realize this by now, but the pics you post are the same size as Jim's if you double click on them. Apparently, some people "imbed" their photos, and some "attach" by using the attachment icon above the "Reply to Thread" dialogue box.

These are some great projects - can't post pics of mine yet, as Christmas won't happen until tonite at our house, and not until Tuesday for my daughter who is coming in!! At least a couple of my adult kids know that I post on the creek.

Hard to pick favorites, but I really like Jeremy's cherry table with floating top, and Jim's votive candle holders.

Robert's rocking horse is a work of art! Is that a mix of marquetry, painting, etc.?

Kevin's foot lockers would be a great idea for grandson's, but I would have to make TEN of them!

The cutting board that Tom West did with the graduated stripes is neat, and James' rustic projects harken back to some of my earlier pine projects. Honestly, I think pine is one of the more difficult woods in which to work. It can be very frustrating at times - good job James!

It is really heartwarming to see so many creekers giving from their talents and labor. Nothing endures like a handmade gift. Some news reports indicate that these economic times are causing us to return somewhat to that mentality - at least one good thing out of this mess!!

Congratulations to all that have and will post - fine work!

This is the first of many projects for my first grand child due in March! :)

I was lying in the intensive care unit three weeks ago with only the first coat of stain on the cradle
..wondering if I was going to get this done by Christmas.
but by the grace of god and a little will power there it is!

An old fashioned pine cradle.
It is golden oak oil based stained with four clear coats of special semi gloss urethane.

Without further adieu....

These are a pair of computer desks built for the younglings (Star wars fans unite). Red Oak (not my call) with S/W wood classic stain/seal coat/USL. I didn't have time to order in the Conversion varnish I was going to use so I used what I had on hand.

Originally we were going to leave the opening but now I think I am putting a door over it, I really don't like the look as is.

Construction was pretty basic but I seemed to be repairing oopseys at every turn.

Pay special attention to the Rubik's in the second pic. The third pic is just to show that Amanda and I can solve a Rubik's without taking it apart. :D Only took me 28 years to figure it out.

It is meant to sit next to her chair and hold vital odds and ends. The holes in the top are for remote controls:

Wood is figured white oak with a linseed oil & wax finish. Little cloth bags stapled to the underside hold the remotes. I've got to resew one bag--one remote is way too long.:)

Well that sucks, I've made several like that and got the technique from Taunton. Mine were walnut/cherry. I used cherry in the center, edge glued two walnut strips to the sides, then did exactly as he did using a tongue and groove breadboard end. Pinned and glued in the center, then screws in elongated slots on opposite sides of the pinned center. That way it gave the appearance of the cherry being totally framed by the walnut. (and it was)

So are mine going to implode sometime soon? Have a completely gotten the whole idea of them wrong?
