View Full Version : Anyone have any info/ides on a "square" bowl? I believe it was an off-center turning.

I was down at my Sister-in-law's house for the evening and I had taken her kids some things I had turned. They worked out really well. A lidded box for 1 and a ring/earring caddy for another daughter. We got to talking and she asked for a square bowl. Well I have made some of those before and I offered to make her one but she wanted something a little different.

Anyway as we were talking I had a vague memory of seeing a picture/website with a bowl that was actually 4 "off-center" turnings in 1. So that the sides while curved were distinct from each other. If I recall what I had see right it would be done by going off-center 4 times to establish each outer curve. But that is about all that I recall.

Before tackling something like that for the first time I would like to read up on it and potential problem etc...

Anyone have a reference for that kind of turning? Or have done it yourself and willing to describe the practice?

Thanks! I, as always, really appreciate all the help and answer. You people are the best.

Happy Holidays!

i would go to youtube as well, there are some cool ideas on different square bowls, or even a reg bowl on a square plate ( solid piece).

Go to http://www.robert-sorby.co.uk/ and look under the tips section there is a description and pictures on laying out a three sided bowl. It is the same method for any number of sides you wish to make. I have made a five sided after watching a demonstrator from Sorby show us how. I would suggest that you make sure the front and back faces are parallel so that when you mark your layout lines, you can cut more accurately to the line and will make you sides look even when viewed from above. Good luck.

Zuke,

I have that bowl sitting on my desk at work. :D

John Benton turned it as a demo for the Charlotte Woodturners Club and later donated it to the club I belong to, Southern Piedmont Woodturners. I won it in a monthly raffle. It is beautiful.

Public thanks to John. It was very kind of him.

To keep this post on-topic, I have to say it's a winged bowl and I don't think it's what Joshua is looking for. But as you can tell I like talking about it.

Take care.

Thanks guys. That Robert Sorby link was the one that I remembered. I had recalled it being square but that shape will work perfectly!

Thanks so much guys. You saved me tons of time and wasted effort in searching so that I can get back to the turning.

As always the Creekers are the best!

P.S. sorry for the delay in responding. Due to weather and some personnel problems with American Airlines my wife and I got to spend much of the holidays in a hotel room in Chicago without internet access instead of with friends and family. Pretty darn cool, not. :( Anyway, at least I have something great to head home with and to try out once I get there!
