Well, I just finished the christmas present for my parents. It was an old redbud stump in their front yard. I had checked online and didn't see many mentions of redbut but the grain and color is real cool. It has some checking and cracks but it adds character. I roughed it down to about 1"thick, covered it with paraffin for about 6 weeks then turned it. I sanded to 320 then sprayed sanding sealer and sanded again with 600. I then gave it 3 coats of deft semigloss from a rattlecan. It's amazing the sense of accomplishment you get from something you take from the yard to a present. fun..fun..fun

Doug,
That is a very nice piece. Very well done!

Aaron,
If you are thinking of trying some redbud, make sure you seal it in a hurry and turn it ASAP. I cut some redbud and all the wood had cracked within 10 min of cutting due to the unusual imperfections in the trunk structure (I guess????).

remarkably beautiful. That must have been kind of scary to turn.

Doug, I have some redbud drying from a tree I trimmed one of three trunks from this summer. Hope I get as good a result from it as you have from yours. Nice to know the grain is so colorful.

It is one of those hidden resorces that old bush or an ornamental in the yard. LOML, (Garden person) is always offering me her trimmings for Pens. Some times it works, some times not. Redbud srely works for you. Thanks for sharing. :):)

Doug,
If you are a beginner, you are well on your way to becoming a great turner. That N.E. has some great eye turning qualities and is very well turned. Great job and keep-um coming. Happy Holiday's
