Anybody know what type of foam this is? Apparently its for prototyping stuff just curious if anyone knows the name of the product?

Probably a polyurethane resin.
Comes in all flavours - self-skinning, self-foaming etc. and often used for prototypes and short production runs.

Hi,

Not sure but if the prototype was made with a 3D Printer it's probably ABS plastic. My son is taking engineering drawing in school and they use one of those things. He said it squirts out and builds up a 3 dimensional prototype from a 3 dimensional cad drawing. Sounds cool.

If it's ABS it was probably done on FDM machine. We have such a machine and it produces models directly from CAD files done in 3D.

Difficult to tell from the small picture, but it could very well be a fine closed-cell foam. throw a block of the stuff onto a CNC mill and in 20 minutes you have a surprisingly accurate (yet extremely light) model. Cover it with plaster of paris, pour in hot metal (which melts the foam), crack plaster, and you have a heavy-duty piece.
