We will be taking a 3 or 4 day fun trip to San Antonio from Houston.
Does anyone know of any sawmills with good hardwoods along the way?
Wife loves stopping at 'wood' places.

We will be leaving on Thurs the 18th (day after tomorrow) and coming back on Sat or Sun. I will have internet access every night.

Thanks in advance.

Tony, I know it's not on the way, and they probably don't have any wood there, but there is a sawmill manufacturer about 10 miles north of Nacogdoches. My wife, her father and I took a short tour of Logmaster last Christmas when visiting my stepdaughter. It is a small place, but it looks like they have a broad line of sawmills. Maybe you'll have to get your own and cut your own wood someday.

My wife's brother has his own woods, his own sawmill, his own kiln, and his own wood shop. I think it's been years since he bought a stick of wood. I wish!

Last year we also traveled from Nacogdoches to San Antonio, toured Engine Components, Inc. (aircraft engine parts mfr), and drove back the same day. Sounds like you must be traveling by bicycle or checking out every wood lot and hardware store in between the two cities! I don't recall seeing any sawmills, but we left early and got back late, so there was no time for side trips. There was a lot of logging around Nacogdoches, but I think it was just for pulp wood.

There really aren't any saw mills around San Antonio. There are hardwood suppliers to buy wood, like Allen & Allen (http://www.lumberhardware.com/) and Blue Linx (http://www.bluelinxhardwoods.com/) though.

What you may want to do is check out the web site for The Texas Mesquite Association's Spring Seminar (http://www.texasmesquiteassn.org/spring.html). Although this is for an event to come in 2009, check out the info for Jerry DeGroot, it's my understanding he does sawyer work. You might want to contact him about his saw mill operation.

a nice slab of walnut or cherry or something unusual for a coffee table. I do not like mesquite although it can be pretty but not worth the effort or wear and tare on my tools.

It is not exactly on the way to San Antonio, but there is a sawmill I visited that is about 10 miles west of Huntsville. Here is a link.
