Here are two ice cream scoops I made using Rockler's new kit. One's for Mom and the other is for mom-in-law.

Not a difficult project, but a lot of fun none the less. The kits are well made. My only complaint has to do with the diameter of the tang on the scoop. Rockler recommends a 3/8" diameter hole. That's slightly too large for my taste and leaves the tang too much room to rattle in the hole. My drill index steps up in 1/32" increments, the next smaller size produced a hole too small for the tang to fit into. No matter, the epoxy holds the scoop solidly.

The handles are bocote, a wood I've never turned before. It's oily, hard, dulls tools quickly, takes details well, and is prone to tear out. The handles were sanded through 320 grit and have a couple coats of walnut oil on them.

Very nice looking!! I was just at my local Rockler and almost bought some. Guess I should next time I am in.

I have a couple of birthdays coming up that I need gifts for.
