I turned this bowl early in the year to a finish thickness, and then let it dry, so it could do it's thing, last week I retuned the base and then sanded and finished it with some polymerized Tung oil, it's about 8½" X 2½"
All comments appreciated :D

Leo,

That is one very striking bowl! I love the contrast and the grain! I need to get some more things completed besides ornaments. The last bunch sold in 2 days and the shop owner wants more!

Again very nice piece!

Thats some of the coolest grain Ive seen in a bowl Leo. Where did you come across the wood? Great job as usual with the turning too!!

Very pretty bowl Leo! Love the grain! The elm didn't warp very much when compared to the apple! Nice work Leo!

Leo,

I really like the grain in this bowl as well as the form, and the contrasting sap wood really brings it out. Great Job!

Hi Jim, thanks :D, oh quite a story really, I had eyed that tree for a couple of years already, as it looked to be full of burly lumps, and not very healthy anymore, but it was growing some 600KM from my place, close to my sons place, and last year I saw it was starting to look the tree would be cut down soon, as it was standing next to the road, so I told my son to keep an eye out for it if it was cut down, well between it being cut down and me getting it home was another adventure, but it turned out that this tree had been into 2 wars and lost each one of them , you wouldn't believe how badley split and chewed up it was inside, and full of carpenter ants, not just one nest but a few dozen, it was in the middle of winter when I loaded it up and got it home, and when I cut the log pieces up there were hundreds of ants, they just fell out where I cut, they didn't move, but no they surely weren't dead, any piece that warmed up in the shop had live ants again after they thawed out, the wood itself is beautiful but is was split and cracked all over, I'll show you one picture so you have some idea of what the inside looked like.
I would not have started on it had I known, but after I start on it I don't easily give up ;)

Sure is some pretty wood. Like the form. Saved it to my "Bowl Picture" file. Seems like I save most of your bowl pics there.:D

Quite nice bowl, Leo. It looks like it still has a little gravy left in the bottom. :U
Elm is some pretty stable wood, isn't it.

Hi Allen, thanks, This wood did move quite a bit, seems to be the case with most denser woods, but it is pretty stable afterwards, The other Elm species wood, doesn't come anywhere near the rock Elm in looks, though they can also be quite nice, and boy it is tough wood, no wonder the British Navy did build their wooden ships with this wood, as the wood does hang together tenaciously, so less wooden slivers of shrapnel to fling around to kill and maim the sailors if the ship was hit by canon fire.

Thanks John :D, and yes stories to go with it, but also questions, I still am wondering what did happen to the tree to get it damaged that badly, maybe I will find out some of it, as I will be going shortly to bring a bowl to the person that let me have the wood, he might know :)
