Here is one of the three segmented bowls I finished this week.

(haven't done the pictures of the others yet - this one has to go out tomorrow)

(Note to self: Learn how to do better pictures - defuse the light)

If you read the WC Turning forum - this is the one that I whined about blowing up earlier in the week, and was able to repair it.

Anyway, this thing is 9" wide. Made of Bloodwood, and Yellowheart. The walls are a very consistant 1/4" thickness. It is finished with "Witch's Brew", and has not yet been buffed out. (Have to give it as a wedding present tomorrow, and then ask for them to give it back to me in a week or so, so that I can "Beal" buff it).

This is the first one that I have ever done with beading on the neck.

Thanks for looking.

Mark,

That is really nice. I just recently started turning. I've done a few bowls and some spindle turning, but I'm intriqued with segmented and hollow forms. I guess I'm going to need to get some hollowing tools. Can you elaborate on your segmenting and hollowing process? What tools do you use?

Again, really nice work.

Beautiful as usual Mark. I would say you are quite good at repairs. I certainly can't tell you made a repair.

Thanks for the pix,
Bob

Wow Mark, that is a great piece of work. Like was mentioned above, I don't think you could tell it blew up except for you telling us. I really really like that piece. :) Awesome work.

Mark,

To me the best reference on how to do Segmented turning, is Kevin Neely's website
http://www.turnedwood.com/index.shtml

Kevin will show you it works, and the jigs to make.

Kevin also sells some software that will help you calculate how cut the wood. I used that software when I first started, and it is cheap. However, it only calculate the segments for one layer at a time.

Lloyd Johnson has, what in my opinion is a better software (two actually) called Woodturner Pro that helps you build the whole bowl, and then 3DPro show you a rotatable 3D model of that bowl, or you can design it in 3DPro, and export it to WTP and build your rings/segments.

http://www.woodturnerpro.com

Then there is a forum just for Segmented Turners

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/creativewoodturners/

As to the things I do/use:

Since you build the bowls in rings, they are already hollow, what you have to do it to smooth the inside (and outside). I mostly use a Sorby Hollowmaster, mostly with the teardrop shaped scraper to smooth the inside.

I am a beginner on Hollow forms from solid wood, but I use the same tool right now, and am always looking for other, better (?) tools.

One thing that I do differently then most segmented turners is, I use hot Hide Glue for all my work. 1) It sets up quickly (I can work faster then most), 2) without any clamping I get much tighter joints (I do not have to have a press to clamp each layer to the next), 3) it is cheap (you can even take the squeeze out, and throw it back in the pot and reuse it) and 4) it seems to not have glue creep (where you can feel the glue joint after a couple of weeks, like with most PVA glues). If you ever decide to try hot hide glue, do not waste your money on a comercial glue pot. Buy a $15 electric hot pot from Walmart, put water in it, and put your glue in a glass jar in the water (much cheaper, and when the jar get junked up, throw it away, and get another.).

Hope that this all helps.

Mark,
That is a wonderful piece of work. Some of the stuff you turners turn out is truly amazing.

Hey,

I can't see the pictures, not even off the hosting server. What's up?

Mark,

Thanks for all of the info. Kevin Neeley's site is a great resource. As far as the tools go, is the Sorby Hollowmaster the only tool that you use to hollow? Any others? Do you (or can you) also use it to hollow solid pieces?

Hi Mark

Nice save on the bowl! You would hardly know it exploded (except for the story of course). I know what you mean about stomping - I mean storming around the shop too. Of course, that never happens around here... :D

Mark,
I have a couple of self-made hollowing tools that I have tried, but because of the size of the steel that I used, they only work well on smaller hollowing. Like most people that do hollow work, I am always in the quest for a better tool, but at present, the Hollowmaser is the only thing that I am using consistantly.

Very nice piece even if it wasn't a save!
