I picked this up at a 2nd hand store years ago and just dug it out and thought I might make a wooden body for it. Any thoughts? Seen anything like it? It's 1 3/4" x 7 3/4" .

Cool. Wonder if it stays put as the cap iron compresses.

Very unusual iron, Paul; I've never seen anything quite like it. It ain't from around here, that's for sure; continental Europe would be my guess.

I have an Austrian iron/cap iron duo made by Johann Weiss & Sohn that looks like that. It was in a coffin smoother, which is a little strange for a contintental design (might have been an export).

Here's a page with a picture of a chisel with a mark similar to that: http://holzwerken.de/museum/hersteller/beitel.phtml -- unfortunately, the author states that this page is generally for chisels with marks that he doesn't know. You may want to contact him and show him your picture.
