Ok,

So I'm planning on making a set of four sliding doors for a very wide open closet. I'd like them to be thicker than the standard 3/4" like kitchen cabinet doors. I'd like to get a hold of 5/4 thick poplar and plane it down to 1". The doors are going to have a flat recessed MDF panel and will be painted.

Any good sources for poplar that thick around Philly? I live in Manayunk.

John V.

I buy my wood at a place called Delaware County Supply, down Route 95.

There is a great lumber yard near Kutztown that we visited at one summer 5 Barns picnic that probably has it. Sorry I don't recall the name of the place. Try woodfinder.com

There is also Hearne Hardwoods out in Oxford. It's a bit of a drive but they are well stocked.

Hearne's is a wonderful place, I could spend a day just walking around.

It's a bit of a drive, however, as noted.

Delaware County Supply is closer, they don't have quite the selection or mystique of Hearne's but they do have a huge selection. Plus, the guys out in the yard are extremely helpful and knowledgable. Maybe I could spend 3/4 of a day there.

Couldn't go wrong with either place, but you can get 5/4 poplar just about anywhere.
