Made this for my sister-in-law for Christmas. Made from walnut with a satin varnish finish, about 8" high, and the botton disk is 5 1/2" diameter. The pin cushion on top is homemade from felt, and the object stuck in it is a "stilleto". This is just a pin glued into a handle (deer antler, in this case), but it is quite useful for a variety of tasks.
The pegs for the thread spools are 1/4" dowel rod with a ball turned on the end. The top pegs are reduced to 3/16" to fit sewing machine spools.

I'm sure your sister-in-law (and one of her lucky daughters) will cherish it for years to come.
