I posted pictures of the matching cherry end tables a couple of months ago, and finally got the main piece done. Cherry and cherry ply, Waterlox finish. Took me 1 1/2 years to complete (I have 3 little kids that cut into my shop time). I borrowed the overall design from one I found on the internet, but modified the molding and trim to suite our own taste. Overall, very pleased with the results.

BTW, the TV is a placeholder until such time as we can swing a 42-ish inch flat panel. Funny thing was, I never measured that little 25" TV until I put everything together. I had to set it up on some blocks to get it to slide back far enough to fit!! http://sitelife.woodmagazine.com/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-surprised.gif (http://www.woodmagazine.com/dgroups/;)

Chris, that is a fine looking piece, I particularly like the double hinged door to fold back out of the way. Thanks for posting.

Chris, I can't find a single thing I don't love about your piece. Great execution!

The only thing I don't like about your piece is that it raises the bar a little too high for some of us. :D

Awesome. How'd you finish it?

Chris Kelble

The finish is 2 coats of Waterlox sealer and 2-3 coats of Waterlox Satin finish. Expensive stuff, but does look nice. I put the first few coats on with a sponge brush, but the last coat or 2 I wiped on to eliminate streaks.

the finish is kind of blotchy but as cherry darkens with age it should even out. Good edging on the shelving inside. Some like to leave the ply exposed which is not a good look.

The finish looks a little blotchy in the pictures, but in person, that is mostly the curl in the cherry coming out. I guess that gets back to the old argument about is it blotchy or is it figure....

Extremely well done piece and the finish looks great to me... it is cherry and will most definitely darken with time... Post again in a year or two. ;)

Nice looking piece Chris. I like the subtle arch of the side trim and the double hinged doors. Did you make the cove molding at the top or is it purchased?

Made everything myself. Small fortune in router bits wrapped up in this project (especially if you count the Freud raised panel set). Cove molding was done on the tablesaw.

VERY nice, chris.

How'd you do the columns on either side? Those look carved?

It's just a lamination of a stack of thinner trim pieces on top of the main 3/4" thick board that serves as the door. Just tried to get things to fit tight. Also, the only cross-grain pieces are the top ledges, so I think I just glued those in the middle to avoid cross-grain stress.

Beautiful and it's only going to get prettier as it ages!

Nice work

Thank you for sharing the photos. Your cabinet is absolutely elegant. Great fit and finish. My last project was Cherry and really liked working with it & will probably do it again. Do you use it regularly?

This and my matching end tables are my first projects in cherry. I do like working with it, and still have quite a bit left yet from what I bought for this project. It machines and finishes very nice. The only thing I struggled with a lot was trying to match the grain from different boards. A lot of the boards I have are more brown tinted rather than pink. Plus I had some with a lot more curl than others. Add all that to the fact that this was picked from a stack of mill run boards, there was a lot of scrap which required even more effort to match grain.

Great design and beautiful finish. Good fit on the doors which is always a challenge with the double fold. I would grade this one A+++.

Wow, Chris, I wanna be like you when I grow up. The arched columns on the side trim caught my eyes immediately, but the entire piece is simply striking.

I can relate to the time factor - I have two little boys who think they're "helping" when they're in the shop. Can't imagine three helpers...

Outstanding Chris!!

Actually, I think the finish looks exceptionally even for a piece done in Cherry. The different way the light catches the figure on a piece makes it much more visually interesting to me.
