Am I the only one here addicted to the show "Cool Tools" on the DIY Network?

I'm sick of it. Seems like it is all that is on DIY channel lately.

I like the show's concept, and have learned a few things ... but I really don't care for the 'personality' of the host and that has kept me from being a regular viewer.

+1 Grundy's 7th grade approach to everything tied with the "infomercial" nature of the show bugs me.

Jason,

I am afraid you may be one of the few on here who like "Cool Tools." ;)

I take it you didn't get your fill over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The concept of the show is nice and I have seen some nice stuff on it.

But running 4 days straight of it, repeating episode after episode finally broke me. A more knowledgeable/ less obnoxious host would help.

DIY is shoving the show down your throat and beating everyone into submission until you like it.

I wish they would run a marathon of NYW and Woodworks over Christmas. Never know...it might actually turn some people on to our craft.

Until then I am stuck watching WW video blogs online.

Watched it one time - that was enough. I don't need to watch an infomercial on my hobby. And-- the host is terrible.

Unfortunately, the sponsorship money on those type of shows is huge, so we will probably see more of them. It costs $$ to produce and run the really good shows, and they can only sell 8 minutes of available ad time for a 30 min. show. Cool Tools is all ad, so the money has to be much better.

Watched it once. Thats all I needed.

I've tried to watch it several times, but it's way too much hype -- and having a caffeine-addicted host takes it over the top for me.

I did see a torch stone cutter that was kind of cool on CT... No idea what I'd use it for. But, other than that, its pretty much been old hat.

CALM DOWN, QUIT YELLIN', STOP JAMMIN' HIS HANDS TOGETHER, OPEN HIS EYES, and get some decent CONTENT, then it would be a good show for people who want a battery operated tape measure.
There.....I feel much better.

Saw a few minutes of it when I didn't want to watch "Ace of Cakes" on Food Network HD. I didn't really see anything too "kewel" from a tool standpoint and yes, the host is somewhat "in your face", although that's typical for a lot of this kind of programming these days...including on Food Network HD which is about the only thing I watch outside of the news.

I have almost stopped watching any shows on DIY and HGTV ... Cool Tools could be a much better show if they would replace the Host and stop showing it over and over!

I have watched it from time to time. Most of it is stuff that nobody needs or wants. However, the hoop shaped contraption for leveling the feet of a ladder did catch my interest. If only anyone near here carried such a beast, it might help.

I would agree that Grundy needs to be replaced. Someone else said that he presents things in a 7th grade fashion. I think that is being awfully generous.

I watched it a few times for a few minutes. I hear that the powers that be in the TV industry think that we consumers have short attention spans, and are becoming a less informed audience. I disagree, I think the opposite, and as we know there are usually better things to be done then waste our time watching the crap most of them turn out, and we turn the TV off. Yes, they get 30 seconds to make there sales pitch, but in that amount of time, they lost me as a viewer because the show stunk. The concept has potential, but...

Well, Jason, I will buck the trend and say that I really like the show. The host really makes me laugh. He reminds me of a good friend of mine and has my kind of humor.

Although I would not buy most of the tools, and many are really for construction, I like seeing what is going on in the world of tools without having to go to a tool show.

I can see who others may not like it, though. My family is split 50-50. My wife and 12 year-old daughter can't be in the same room when I watch, but my 7 year-old daughter and I watch every episode! She is my little woodworker!

That would explain why my 8 yr old likes the show so much. I watch it with him occasionally. I've seen a couple things that were interesting - some of the welding equipment and the LN and Barr manufacturing processes (different shows).

I like the show well enough to sit a first run episode, but the way DIY runs them into the ground usually makes it a miss for me. I did find their Tools and Techniques show with host David Thiel is airing on DIY in the wee hours just before the infomercials start. I've been tivoing them and they are a good watch. Definitely not a new show, but for DIY it's pretty good.

I like the products they show, wouldn't have seen half of them otherwise. Don't like the host, they should give the show to Amy Winn-Pastor, who seems to be "co-hosting" for him a bit more lately. I also don't like when they take segments from old shows, repackage them, and try to pass it off a new show with a theme (painting, cleanup, etc). Fix those problems, and it could be a great show.

Eric DeSilva

I went to their website to see if I could figure out how much the stone jet they had cost (turns out the "jet stik" is about $1800... :(). But, I was surprised at the tools they showed--lots of Festool, Lie Neilsen, the Fein Multimaster, the Delta Unisaw... Shoved in there amongst the cheesy multitools they seem to have some good stuff. I wouldn't mind the torchmate CNC they showed either...

But, I'll agree Grundy is a put-off. Why not have someone who actually knows what they are talking about doing the show?

That's the whole problem with DIY in general. They are overly scripted, and not loaded with content. Last year I watched cool tools, man caves, hammered, blog cabin and anything with Amy Mathews in it :D

This year the only shows I watched were Hammered and Blog Cabin (and anything with Amy Mathews in it:D). Although if they let Ahmed Hassan host Blog Cabin next season I may not watch it.

Not sure why I like Hammered. I think it's John Diresta. He reminds me of my family growing up.

I only put up with it because my kid gets a kick out of it . The new episodes are ok . Grundy is Grundy . We have some fun with our imitations of him . Most of what they show is gimmick stuff . Can't say I have ever bought any thing from watching it ...... if it was up to my kid that would be another story !

my stepbrother has the battery operated tape measure. i had no idea such a thing existed. when i picked that stupid thing up next to his miter saw last time i was in his shop and couldn't figure out how to operate it, and he said "must need new batteries", it took all of my self control not to throw it at him.

Does he have the talking tire pressure guage I got for Christmas last year? I know I am glad I got one, because after 25 years as a professional mechanic, I just never learned how to read those darn things. :)

Cool Tools definitely reminds me of an Oxy Clean Commercial.

I can't stand the show and dislike the host even more. The channel executives have pretty much ruined DIY. I use to really like the woodworking and remodeling shows, especially Holmes on Homes. I seldom tune in anymore. I may disconnect my cable and use the money for magazines that I enjoy reading.

Egads:eek: not another one. I dont get DIY so's here's another reason to keep it that way. When Mr. Mays starts pitching one of his signature dartboards with his face in the middle, I'm buyin one of those for sure.

Doesn't anyone remember cool tools when David Thiel was the host. Not only was he a far better host but the content was better. Sadly that may have been in DIY's hayday.

Jeff Heil
12-08-2008, 10:20 PM
The difference between the hosts is David actually knew how to use the tools and wasn't an obnoxious hired maketing machine. DIY used to actually have a little content to their shows, now it's mostly fluff, and not on at my house.

Another NO vote for Grundy and his stupid antics. What he knows about tools could be written on the head of a pinner. BUT, as for DIY, they are good whores. Look at it this way: free show and 4 days to shoot everything. make it up as you go. That is the cheapest possible production formula. And it gives them quite a few inroads into the mfrs for other projects...like th eir plant visits. Amy Matgthews - great idea. Amy Devers mah, she is still stupid. At 71, I dont have to grade every on camera lady by their bust size (but I do anyway.) Amy Matthews has picked up her skills and pressentation methods by being smart on that show.
My vote would be for Gail.

I actually like Grundy. over the top for sure, but lighten up, that silly excitement is for entertainment only, and you can decide for yourself about the tool from the short segment. Only watch when the dvr tells me it's a new one and I can zip through the commercials.

My 10 year old son said, "This guy, (the host) sucks! Please change the channel or I'm leaving the room." I think Grundy is the most annoying and useless host of any show I've ever seen on any subject. It's almost like some Saturday Night Live skit you might see. I tried to watch the show a couple of times to see a new tool or two but I just couldn't take it. I think I'd rather watch Rachel Ray tell me how to dress for spring than watch another episode of that show.

Stunning looks only go so far - then you find yourself hitting the mute button on the remote...:D

I actually like Cool Tools - host and all.

Makes an old TV commercial come to mind... Where's the beef? Needs more contect and less filler.

And yes I agree; Grundy does remind one of the Oxyclean commercial. The over-amped, diaphragm driven voice just needs to go.

John Carlo

The host seems to be a really nice guy and I'd bet his real personality is showing. Some people are really that exuberant. It's the producers that need to tone it down so it's not so "over the top". I'd change the name to "New Tools" and give the pros and cons of each. Of course, I'm the kind of guy that would make producers/editors crazy for tearing out and discarding all those stupid cards as soon as I get my hands on a new magazine. I don't like some magazine screaming at me to flip to these "bookmarks" and i don't need it in my video content either.

Brian Kerley

Amy Devers mah, she is still stupid.

Wow....see, I think otherwise of her. If you've ever seen her on trading spaces, or even Freeform Furniture (good show), she knows her way around a workshop. She's even got a degree or masters in furniture design, etc. I've seen her make some pretty interesting stuff, use some neat techniques, and also try out new materials.
