This is a jewelry box turned from African Mahogany with ebonized walnut legs. It's about 15" across the legs, 6.5" tall. More spindle turning and skew work than I want to do again for a while. Each leg is 3 sections, the neck is 2 sections. So that makes 32 pieces counting the boxes, lids, knobs, and legs.

Straight on view.....

Curt - absolutely outstanding!!! This highlights one of the things I love most about your work - you always manage to add a touch of fantasy/whimsy to your turnings!

Love the imagination on this one as well! Can't believe how long it must have taken to do all that spindle turning! Great job on matching all those leg segments! Really like the idea of 2 jewelry boxes incorporated into the spider. The boxes themselves would have been worth a separate thread just to show them off!

Exceptional work Curt! Always thrilled to see your turnings and this one was over the top! Thanks for sharing!

I am a huge turner fan and I don't turn. Please don't hold that against me though. You guys never cease to amaze me and this piece is no different.

Thanks Curtis!

The idea should get as much credit as the execution.Beautiful work and great "out of the box" idea.

Curt,

To say that piece is imaginative is like saying the Mona Lisa is just a painting.

That is really cool Curt. But I'm thinking it should be a Halloween candy dish instead of a jewelry box. The kids would love it. :D

I can only agree with all the great things that have been said. Let me add it really should be entered in a few shows.

Some body jumped way out of the box on that one. That is definitely a display case item for special occasions. Did you drill and peg the legs together?

Totally awesome dude!! (Ouch, just dated myself.) That is really well done. I would have gone nuts trying to duplicate all those spindles! I really like the sattelite box for the head. That has got to take the prize for the most amazing usable piece I have ever seen.

Curt,
I love the style when you do these types of turnings, very unique and different, and the execution is always excellent.

Thanks everyone! Just so you don't think I've really lost it, the reason for making something this wierd is an art show that is held annually at the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City. https://www.hoglezoo.org/events_experiences/annual_events/art_show
My wife has entered paintings in the show for several years so I decided to try something myself. And a spider was the only animal I could think of that had body parts that could be made on the lathe. It's built using the Tinkertoy concept. The pieces look much more identical in the photo than they really are. If you laid all the leg parts side by side you would see they're all similar but a little different in length.
Jeff, it will be listed for sale in the Hogle Zoo show but with such an outlandish price that it will make sure I will most likely get to keep it.
