A fellow on this forum has objected to my use of the terms "Canuck" and "Yankee" on this forum. ( He sent me a P.M. chastizing me for my behavior )

I would like to apologize to all members of this forum and especially to those residing in Canada and the New England states.

I have looked both terms up in the Merium Webster Dictionary:

Merium Webster Dictionary: "Yankee"

1 a : a native or inhabitant of New England b : a native or inhabitant of the northern U.S.
2 : a native or inhabitant of the U.S.

Merium Webster Dictionary" "Canuck" [the proper spelling]

Main Entry: Ca•nuck
Pronunciation: k&-'n&k sometimes -'nuk
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: 1835
: a Canadian and especially a French Canadian

I don't intend to use either term on this forum again. I do intend to discuss "Grits" and "BBQ" more in the future. These are subjects I do have expertise in.

Yes -- you should stop doing that --- you can still refer to me as a "redneck" though. Definition: "either a bad dude from Eastern Tennessee or North Alabama".

Zack,
How's this for confused...
I'm a product of a father who was born and raised in East TN...and a mother who was born and raisied in East Boston MA. They now live in Maryville Tenn. My sisters grew up and still live in NM...my son in AZ...my daughter in VA.

And to top it off...about 5 years ago I married a wonderful and very proud Canadian who doesn't mind be called anything relating to Canada...including a Canuck...just don't call her 'Merican!

So what would you call me? Glenn works most times...

Zack,
I was born a Connecticut Yankee (it's also the name of a book), raised in Georgia (Rebel?), my three oldest children live in Florida, I currently live in New Jersey, I have been to 16 countries, lived in Asia for 5 years, lived in Europe for 5 years, I am a white male, married to an Asain woman, with an Amerasian son who is currently dating a Hispanic girl. My oldest son's wife (my favorite daughter-in-law) is hispanic, which makes my Grandson half hispanic. My best friend is black, the best man at my wedding was black, and I was married by a black baptist preacher. So..... I am so confused that I don't have time to be prejudiced against anyone or anything. Zack, thats why there is the ignore option on this great forum! In the words of the great philosopher, Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along"!

Dr. Zack,
You referring to us Northerners as Yankees is not a big deal to me. Just as someone referring to you Southerns as Rebels. Besides aren't these some sports teams mascot's :p ?
As far as...
I don't intend to use either term on this forum again. I do intend to discuss "Grits" and "BBQ" more in the future. These are subjects I do have expertise in. I like anything "BBQ" ribs, chicken. you name it and my "Grits" I like mine with good Yankee cheddar cheese mixed in them.:D

Fret not, DocZack, I'll take up the rubric of annoying the overly sensitive. ;)

Since Saint Patrick's Day is just on the other side of the weekend, I say we get started on exacerbating the tensions between the Irish, er, Micks, and English, er, Limeys. (In truth, we should be doggin' the Romans on St. Patrick's Day - :D)

Of course, its currently open season on the French.... ;)

I'm at a loss to understand how anybody could be offended by being called a Yankee ("damn Yankee" is another matter) or Canuck, unless, of course, one were a fiercely proud Scotian.... but then, the desert sun has toughened my skin.

Canard= Duck : Duck= Canard

Canuck= French Duck with English mother.

It is a term of endearment here in Canada.

We have sports teams of that name.

We proudly call each other Canuck!

Most folks know us kindly around the world as Canucks.

I am always saddened when folks use words to divide people into groups so they can hate them.
I can't believe we have language police at a wood forum either!

Obviously not the sharpest tool in the drawer!

Personally I don't really care what you call me as long as it's not "late for supper".

Regards

Bob

I grew up in OHIO, and spent 4 years in BOSTON while in the USAF. I think that YANKEE is a good reputable name for anyone not from a southern state. I object to anyone who says otherwise. As far as Canuck goes, I let our Canadian friends opine. But remember there is a baseball team and a hockey team with those names, so they can't be that bad.

I also like the Cleveland INDIANS, the Atlanta BRAVES, etc., etc. Listen to too many of the politically correct, and we will have sports teams called A, B, C, D, or 1. 2, 3, etc. Just think of the basketball scores: teams A and B are playing, now for the half time score, A 42;)

Zack, remember a person can choose to be offended or not, it is their decision and as such, their problem. Just like the misnomer " he makes me angry", no you can choose to be angry or not to be.

I choose to be angry at the politically correct

Hello again Dr. Bob............

So happy to hear again from you and that you are well. I'm pleased I haven't offended you (You know who you are). Never the less I did offend someone. So, My vow is sacred. There are now 9 words I can't say on the internet. Fortunately, Canadians do have a sense of humor. You are all invited down to Arkansas sometime for Grits & BBQ. [American Beer only... Bud-lite for Ken & Lonestar for me in the longneck bottles.]

It's funny to me how the intent of a term or statement seems to gets lost on some "over-sensitive" types. The terms Canuck and Yankee are insults if the user intends them to be. Then again so are "Canadian" and "Northerner" if that's the intent.

When the Washington Redskins played the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl, there were groups protesting outside the Dome. They were, of course, protesting the use of "Redskin". They apparently didn't have a problem with the Buffalo Bills, named after Buffalo Bill Cody, who gained his notoriety killing buffalo in order to drive the American Indians off the plains.

Please folks, it's pretty easy to tell when someone is insulting you. Until that happens, let a little politically incorrect humor go.

P.S. As a Catholic, I have a real problem with New Orleans :D

Uh, not to be dense, but why would a Catholic have a problem with "New Orleans"? So a passel of French colonists from Orleans want to keep the memory of their hometown alive....

Can't see any difference between New Orleans, New York, New Jersey, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, etc, etc... (of course, the Italians, Irish, and all the other latecomers got rooked in place names, relatively speaking....)

Hey Dr. Zack,

Seems like everywhere you go, you're stepping in it. We'll have to get together sometimes and talk BBQ. Here in SC, everywhere you go, you get a different kind of BBQ. Up-Sate gets ketchup base, Midlands gets mustard base, and Low Country get vinegar and red pepper.
If anybody else gives you a hard time, we'll take care of him.

In these parts Ketchup and Vinegar are tabbooooo..... The flavor of BBQ should come from dry spices, [Secret crassified recipes] and smoke: Hickory, Apple Wood, Pear or Pecan. In Texas, they use Mesquite but that's what they have.

The tenderness comes from slow cookin' and a constant low temperature. Now ribs require a special trick: Increase the temp from 210 degrees to @ 260 in the third hour to render the fat and get them to tarn loose from the bone. I cook a 4 hour, baby back rib, 1.75 lbs and down. Big ribs ain't gonna win no trophy's.

Good ribs don't need sauce but that's where tomato based recipes belong. Putting tomato based sauces on the meat while it is cooking causes caramelization....... Yuuuuukkkkkkkk.... Puke...spit... drink more beer and move to the next booth. Serve the sauce on the side at the table.... that's OK.

I'm judging the Arkansas State BBQ Championships on March 29th. I'm sure regretting the lost time in my shop but somebody has to do it. And yes Ken these boys do drink massive quantities of beer and generally run around acting ignerent and dressing funny.

Well, shoot, I may as well throw one more into the mix. Be careful how you call me a Hoosier (even though I wasn't born one, I was born in MI). I call Indiana home, and consider myself a Hoosier. If any of you consider a Hoosier to be a dumb, basketball watching hick, then you will have seriously underestimated my mental capacity and put yourself at a grave disadvantage.

And, Bobby Knight is still in the top 5 of all time for coaches (and yes, he does have a temper problem).

Jason

P.S. Dr. Zack, do you care if someone brings beer made in their own American kitchen from a European recipe?!?

I also like caramelized ribs, but not as well as the dry-spiced ones. Just a different one of the 31 flavors.

Here is a Dry Rub recipe for Ribs that is really good! I use this Dry Rub when I do Ribs on the Smoker. It works great on the Charcoal and Electric Smokers. (I have used this recipe on both, the Electric Smoker gets them done quicker, but the results are the same.)

Smokin’ Ribs – Dry Rub

4 Cups of Sugar
1 tsp. Ginger
1 tsp. Allspice
1 tsp. Cayenne Pepper
1 tsp. Paprika
1 tsp. Meat Tenderizer
2 tbsp. Onion Powder
2 tbsp. Garlic Powder
2 tbsp. Black Pepper

Mix seasonings well in pan. Rinse 2 slabs of Ribs and pat dry with paper towel. Coat well with seasonings mixture

Smoke approx. 3 – 5 hours. I add Hickory or Mesquite chips to the Charcoal or Heater pan for that good Smoky Flavor.

On the Electric Smoker, check them after 3 hours, they sometimes are close to being done after that period of time. The Charcoal Smoker is not as hot, so it takes a little longer.

I've been both in past days. Born in Canada, spent time growing up in the Northeast. I for one am deeply, deeply offended. But my hurt feelings can be mollified through the consumption of fine BBQ. Ten pounds oughta just about do it. I'll be home all day tomorrow so it'll be no problem for the FedEX man to find me!

Yankee!?!
As a diehard Red Sox fan, I just can't accept that term. I move that you be expelled from the Creek. ;-)

Enough Already

My apology was sincere. Although I have enjoyed your support, I have learned a few things in my 30+ plus years as a health care provider.

Listen to the patient's chief complaint.... This fellow was and is sincere. Your support is only adding to his pain. I have read this man's postings to the forum and visited his website. He's a good guy, a good woodworker, and a good contributor to this forum.

As much as I may have enjoyed some of your comments, I would much rather have his support in the future. I did offend him and for that I am truly sorry.

Please don't add any more comments. This thread needs pass on to oblivion. I can hear the fat lady singing. It's yesterday's news......

These terms are so benign, I'm mystified by these people's anticipatory sensitivy.
You're not gonna please everyone.
Although, I always thought "Yank" referred to all Americans, not just northeastern ones.
Canuckly Yours,
Howard
