I recently turned this hat for a friend. It is Magnolia and about 15" diameter (~3/32" thick). This was only the second piece of magnolia I have turned and it is really easy to cut. The tree was a blown over by Ike. I rough sanded it (it was still a little wet) and he was to finish the hat. He likes the "soft" appearance and may not apply any finish.

That's a great looking hat! Are you going to curl the brim? I like it just as it is.

Sweet gum is great, especially when someone else does the cutting and hauling. Thanks for the wood. I will post a picture when the gum hat is done.
