Hello all, I have finally completed this cherry 7 drawer tall chest. I am really pleased with how this project has turned out. I feel this is my best work so far. An article by Will Neptune in the June 2003 Fine Woodworking (http://www.taunton.com/store/pages/fw_toc_163.asp) gave me the confidence to tackle this chest.
The top three drawers are configured with friction fit dividers, per the owners request. The bottom drawer is set up for hanging file folders.
It is principally constructed as two 'shutters' that are joined together via dovetailed stretchers (front and back). Moldings where then affixed to the top and bottom.
I designed this cabinet to satisfy the storage requirements of it's intended owner. I have really enjoyed this project, I am going to be sorry (as is my wife) when the new owner picks it up later this week.
There are a few subtle design features that I think are interesting. First, on the sides, the top panel is considerably smaller then the bottom panel, yet they remain balanced - IMO. The second, is the third piece of the three-piece molding, it's just 3/16” square stock, but I think it adds a nice shadow line. It's sorta like a little surprise for someone who carefully examines the cabinet (it can be seen better in the Work in Progress thread – link below).
The finish is General Finish Arm-R-Seal wet sander to 1200 then paste wax applied. Enjoy. Lars
