Last Christmas I got a MSUV for my miter saw and seeing as how it is going on a year I figure I really should get some dust collection set up. I got the MSUV because I wanted my miter saw portable for house projects. So any solution has to be easily removable. I'm kind of stumped.

I too have the MSUV with a Hitachi cms on it, and bought this (for a portable setup)

http://www.rousseauco.com/downdrafter/index.htm

on one of those email specials (I think from Peachtree, but life's been so "fun" lately I can't be sure.

So far it's still sitting under one of the benches un-assembled, so no review as yet. If/when I get time to try it, and if it works as advertised, I'll consider getting a second one for the 12" SCMS in the shop... Steve

I bought an early Downdrafter for my Hitachi 10" SCMS.

It worked as long as I was cutting narrow pieces. But as soon as the width was 4“+, its efficiency decreased. Maybe it was my model saw, but I was disappointed considering its cost :(& sold it off as most of my cuts on the SCMS involve wide boards.

What I now do is place a large cardboard box behind the saw w/ the DC hose in it. Seems to work as well. Also should replace the shroud on the blade guard to direct more of the saw dust towards the bag.

I think a MS or a SCMS is just one of those beasts that will resist effective DC. From what I read & hear Fe$tool Kapex seems to have it licked, but a price. I’d like to see the Kapex in use to actually see how effective it is. Maybe when its patent rights expire or the clones appear on the market, will DC on MS & SCMS become more effective.

Fast Cap makes a portable DC “Chop Saw Hood” for the SCMS/MS. I saw it set up @ a Woodcraft demonstration. Didn’t actually see it in operation, but the bag @ the bottom was filled w/ saw dust.

Hello,
- Looks stupid.
- Cost $8.00 - ($4.00 for the tote @ WalMart & $4.00 for the shop vac connector glued on the bottom)
- Works better than I expected.

It doesn't really evacuate the dust. It more or less keeps it confined in one place. I have to use a brush to push the pile towards the hole in the bottom where the hose from the shop vac is connected.

What's an MSUV??

Rich, that's not a bad idea. We are headed to the big box mart today to get some Christmas lights--I'll have to take some measurements and see what I can find. From the commercial solutions and Rich's, it looks like the best approach is to have a separate stand for the hood. Mounting is the biggest part I couldn't figure out.

Hans, MSUV is Ridgid's miter saw stand (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100618245).

What's an MSUV??
Miter Saw Utility Vehicle. Made by Ridged. Collapsable, heavey. Stands in the corner when not in use. I have 2.

Hello Matt,
If there's a Lowes nearby, they have the 18 gal tote for $4.00.
Plus you get a $10.00 off the next purchase of $50.00 or more coupon when you buy anything from them until Nov 30th.

This helps mine a lot. Just an ear off a cardboard box.

... the impossible dream.
I've tried all sorts of ways to effectively catch the SCMS flingings.
What works for MDF, won't work for Oak, and pines just like to float off in the windage.
I've even experimented with half of a plastic drum.
I haven't tried a 20,000 CFM dust collector yet. Maybe that would work?

I realize I won't get everything. When I had my miter saw mounted on a fixed counter I had a homemade hood that got probably 75% of the dust. But most importantly it got the really fine stuff. I could tell immediately when I made a cut with the DC off. But I couldn't figure out how to mount such a hood on the MSUV. I think the answer is that I shouldn't.

Rich E.: now that is a good idea.:D

Lately, I've seen some very large plastic storage boxes for sale. I think I'll take some measurements of the saw's footprint & see what's on the market.

Again, thanks for the post. Looks better than the cardboard box that I use....
