Wood selection will have some restriction on your choices. You can get 2" x4' poplar for $30 on Amazon, that could mimic ash, hickory, and many other woods.

Got a lathe? Know any turners? How long?

Here's a source for the dowel for about $8 each: http://www.bayerwood.com/catalog/WoodDowels.php?cPath=152 They have premade wheels too: http://www.bayerwood.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1607 I go right by this place all the time but have never stopped in to check it out.

Or you could buy a hole saw and make wheels from flat stock.

Or you could rip your stock to 2x2 and use a 1 inch radius round over bit in your router table.

Abram, let us know how it goes. I happened to drive by the intersection they are at again today. The sign says Bayer Hardware--apparently this is an offshoot of a retail hardware store. They didn't look open so I didn't stop in.

Matt,

The order arrived today from Bayerwood. Everything ordered was delivered... they even included 4 or 5 extra pieces of the small axles!

If you ever stop in their place, tell them thanks for me. Now, no excuses. I have to make my grandson his train set. If I can learn how, I will post a picture of it when it is done.

Thanks again, Abram Godshall
