I picked a freebie sheet of a plastic called Nylatron GS. Anyone have any experience laser cutting this stuff? I'm very conservative about which plastics I cut. I would call the manufacturer, but for the holiday.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken you are right to be hesitant about certain plastics, some of them can be quite bad. I was asked to engrave some stuff called 'nyla' something or other and it didn't actually take a very strong setting to get a mark. I heated up a knife and pressed it onto it, turned out to be okay so I engraved it, no problems. If you have a spare bit, try setting a small fire to it and watch what comes up from the smoke, pvc usually has a black sticky residue which floats all over the place, so if that stuff does too then avoid it.

a Google search provided the following.

Nylatron® GS Nylon - Extruded
Nylatron® GS is a molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) filled nylon offering improved strength and rigidity. With a lower coefficient of linear thermal expansion than Nylon 101. Nylatron GS is the extruded grade, whereas Nylatron GSM is the Cast Grade.

Sounds like it would laser almost the same as Nylon.
