I am having a tough time finding an older used floor press. I would rather spend $700 on a used press opposed to an Asian import. Located in MN, 56601.

I have the sources for MN machinery dealers, but I looking for used machinery dealers in the Madison and Milawaukee area in WI and the Chicago area in IL.

I am looking for:
A) Rockwell/Delta version or Delta version as I already have a Delta mortiser kit, otherwise a Powermatic as long as the quill diameter is either 2" or 1.6". (I'd consider a Craftsman version as long its made by Delta)
B) Crank table
C) 5/8 chuck
D) At least 3/4 hp

Thank You

Mike,
They may be a bit far, but Lost Creek Machine has been fair with me in the past.

I assume you know about GC Peterson, & Advantage Machinery?

There's about one cabinet shop per month on K-Bid as well.

The used Delta bandsaw I brought from the original owner came from GC Peterson. Didn't think they sell used tools.

They do. They typically don't have much in stock for used stuff, but they are in some network where they can get all sorts of stuff. I've bought a shaper and a castle machine used from them.

Advantage has a old Powermatic drill press on thier website.

Never even knew about Advantage. Haven't been in a while but used to stop in at Tried and True in Fridley ........... fair amount of used equipment.

In Milwaukee, Robert Ivens Tool (RIMCO):

He charges a handsome price for used gear, though. Absolutely no bargains.

There is a dealer northwest of Chicago called Pleasant Street Machinery. They get discussed regularly on the OWWM forum.

My impression is that most used machinery dealers want top dollar. Craigslist, the OWWM forums, local classifieds, and even Ebay are a lot more likely places to find a good deal, but it takes hunting. As examples, I paid $125 for a Delta DP220 drill press from a friend from OWWM. I paid $60 for a Rockwell 15" floor model from Craigslist which I turned around and sold for $125 within a couple days after deciding it wasn't what I really wanted. I paid $25 for a nice benchtop Duro and then another $20 for a table to make it complete. Before all of these, I was bidding on a Walker-Turner which had a 3-phase motor from a local seller on Ebay. I missed the end and it ended up going for $105. That would have been a really nice DP with a variable frequency drive for speed control.

I'm currently awaiting a slot mortiser being shipped from the guys at Pleasant st. machinery. I've bought stuff before from local dealers and so far these guys have been a much more positive experience. I haven't even received my machine yet and I feel confident enough to recommend them. They also have good companies for shipping. The cost to ship to my neighborhood was very reasonable.
good luck,

Well which one would you guys take?
This one is variable speed and 1 1/2 hp DC drive, 5/8 chuck #2 Morse taper, and 5 inches quill travel

This one is 3/4 hp AC drive, don't know the rest besides being 1/2 chuck, but this one will have a deeper quill, about 6+ travel

Definitely the first because it is older (non-peace symbol vintage), has the production table, and because of the variable speed. The variable speed drive looks older. Servicing it could someday be an issue. However it could pretty easily be replaced with 3 phase motor and modern variable frequency drive. The motor would cost next to nothing used and the VFD in the $150 range.

The second one is just like the one I bought and sold a few days later. Nothing wrong with it but it is just and ordinary run-of-the-mill drill press. Many consider the "peace symbol" Rockwell logo to me the mark of the devil or something. I'm not sure it was that bad, but the machines of that vintage definitely aren't the same as those made 20-30 years earlier. One plus is that they actually still make that machine so basic internal parts might still be available.

Neither...with your budget I'd look for a Powermatic 1150 as they usually run around $500-$600 and are very heavy duty with variable speed. Of course I'm partial since I've got one in my shop:)
But if I had to choose, I'd likely agree with Matt on the first one, of course condition will be the deciding factor.
good luck,
JeffD

Well the first one got sold. I tried to offer a deposit, but the guy was just afraid of scams. I brought a 28-212 bandsaw off CL with a half deposit, and it was alot more pleasant.

I have not heard about the 2nd one yet.

I put up 2 pics, the first one is 220V, and the other is 440V.
These are 17", my question is what horsepower rating, speeds and rpms ranges these older Deltas come with. Im looking to install a VFD device on it. I would like one that goes from 0-5000 rpms.

Update:

Heres more information:
I have a 440 Volt drill that has .002" and the 220 has .003"
A 5/8" plain bearing used Jacobs chuck is $50
They are both 3/4 HP motors.
They have 5 speeds. I'm not sure what the speeds are but they are the low speed pulleys.
How would this guy know exactly if one of them is the high speed version?
If not, can I actually find a set of pulleys to convert it to high speed?
