buffing question

if you are buffing a final finish - like antique oil - how many coats do you apply before buffing?

When I use an oil finish I apply enough coats to build up the finish I want, usually three or four, and then buff. Avoid using the white diamond on dark woods like walnut.

Jeffrey - really depends on what kind of a look you want once it is done. A few coats of oil is a minimum just to protect the wood. After that - the more you apply - the closer you get to that gloss/glass look. Most I have ever put on was 7 coats and then I let everything sit and dry for a week before buffing.

You got some good info. I generally put no more than 4 coats of oil on a piece. I will let it set a week or two before buffing to make sure it has cured.
