I stopped at a borg store (the orange one) to pick up a piece of 1x4 cherry or maple to make a couple of spatulas for my boss. Since I was only looking for a 14" of good board, I figured I could paw through and find something good enough for stirring ground beef.

I don't know whether it's considred curly or quilted maple, but I bought the whole board and looked for more. Just the one, but when all you have is a mini lathe, six feet is a lot of wood.

Here's the first spatula from it. Sanded to 180 and wiped with mineral oil.

Scott - up here we have Menards and I always look through all the wood for the very same reason! I have actually had the sales people ask to make sure I wanted those boards - cause they looked like they were 'diseased or something' !! Have found a lot of curly that way and once, a couple of years ago, I ran across 2 or 3 boards of birdseye pine! Made for some beautiful boxes!

Congrats on your find! Beautiful spatula! Will make for a wonderful gift! Nice work!
