Is there a way of welding two objects together like you can in Corel?

Well in Illustrator CS3 it is in the effects menu under pathfinder... add...
Effects>Pathfinder>Add

Or select both (or multiple) items and in the pathfinder window, click the upper left button. Hold down the alt key at the same time to expand while doing so.

You will find pathfinder and align tools invaluable. Also smart guides (ctrl U).
