Good morning, I would like to turn some small boxes for some Christmas presents, does any know of a site or even books where i can get some ideas as to shape and design. I don't have mush imagination when it comes to designing something like that. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wally - check out these videos - they may help.

Scroll over to the AAW site, located in the tool bar just above the video screen. There are at least 3 different demos on boxes! Enjoy!

Walley,

Go to the turners forum here and select "Search this Forum". Type "boxes" in the search window and look for threads with photos attached.

Go to the Members List....Find a Member Michael Stafford. Go to his profile and select "Find all posts started by Michael Stafford" Big Mike is an extremely talented box maker.

Good luck!

Ditto what Ken said about Mike Stafford and also take a look at Richard Raffan's book on lidded boxes.

For shapes, Mike's postings will probably give you the best range of ideas. He also has pictures posted on the WoodCentral Turning forum and World of Woodturners (WOW). He just recently published a book of his lidded boxes (see link below).

For instruction, you can try Woodturning Online. Below is a link to a number of various tutorials (including an excellent, very detailed one by Mike himself).

Also, an article from American Woodworker by Alan Lacer.

Goto YouTube (www.youtube.com), type in "woodturning boxes" and you'll get a number of returns which may contain some useful info for you.

This one shows someone making a box start to finish:

The Raffin DVD on turning boxes is also excellent. If you don't want to buy it you can rent it from Smartflix (www.smartflix.com). Just search under "turning" or "raffan".

Get hold of John Olson, we have a couple of the Raffin books and DVD's in the club library that you can check out. I have 2 Raffin videos here at my collection," Lidded Boxes" and "Turning Boxes".

I spent 2 days with "Big Mike" when he was in LaCrosse Wisconsin in October.
Call me and come down to my shop. I also just received my copy of Mike's new "Hot" book, full of great pictures woods.
