View Full Version : June FREEStuff Every Day! - Smart Circular Saw Bases

Aaron Koehl

-FreeStuff from EurekaZone-

A fellow SMC member, "Dino the Carpenter", inventor and OEM of the EurekaZone Smart Guide System has graciously
donated 25 Smart Bases to give away to SMC Members!
That's right! We'll hold a drawing every day until the last Saturday in June!

The EurekaZone Smart Base (http://www.eurekazone.org/products/smartbase.html) (tm) is a retrofit for your existing circular saw, which turns it into an "anti-splintering smart saw." Compatible with the EurekaZone SmartGuide system, your circular saw can run along a precision-guided track to cut MDF, Solid Surface Materials, countertops, and other materials with precision, and without splintering (and can be used with or without the EZ SmartGuide track (http://www.eurekazone.org/products/ezsmartguide.html)).

From their website: "Guaranteed to get a better cut with an $11-15 saw blade than with a $200 sawblade, and retails for about $25. Now for the first time, you can have zero clearance inserts on your circular saw and cut without chipping."

Included with the giveaway are 4 anti-chip inserts, mounting hardware, and double-sided tape. I've included some pictures of the results possible with this retrofit from their website. On the website (http://www.eurekazone.org/products/smartbase.html) is a rather impressive display showing the same sawblade/wood with and without the SmartBase system--big difference! (Click the picture below for a larger version).

The donated SmartBases work perfectly despite either slight discoloration or marks (very minor cosmetic damage)--nothing an SMC member couldn't use!

A lucky winner will be drawn from our electronic hat every day until the last Saturday in June. All SawmillCreek members are eligible--drawing is completely random. SmartBases will be shipped daily. Winners will be posted at the bottom of this message.

Please visit their website at www.eurekazone.org (http://www.eurekazone.org/)!!

Information regarding the EurekaZone Smart Base(tm) Circular Saw system can be found here (http://www.eurekazone.org/products/smartbase.html).

Too cool!!! Dino, you rock! :D For those unfamiliar with this system, each and every winner will simply LOVE it! I'm fortunate enough to have the "system", including the rails, but even just the base with the anti-splinter insert, is VERY cool. You can even cut OSB without splinters and, if cutting against something with a finish on it (such as doors), your chances of scratching the finished surface are minimized, because the base isn't metal. Like I said, really cool!

Aaron, I hate to tell you this, but it's not just the oversight on the url. Your computer is obviously malfunctioning, as well. There is NO such person as "Tyler Howell". Really. Trust me on this one! :D Oh sure, you can leave his name (whoever that is) on the post, just send the base to me and all will be good. I'll PM you with my mailing addy... :D Thanks!

Thanks to Eurekazone and Sawmill Creek. This is the first thing I've ever won!

Looking forward to using the Smartbase.

Got a first name... yep. Got a last name... yep. Looks good to me.
All SawmillCreek members with valid usernames are eligible--the drawing will be completely random.

To those who may not know how this works:
You don't have to "opt in" in order to win--just have to be a valid, registered SawmillCreek Member that's visited within the past 60 days. Current odds of winning 1 in 50. Not bad!

Man, Tyler won already??!!!

That man has luck. Get the guide, Tyler ...

And enjoy!

Thanks to Dino for the mutually beneficial contest. My wife says she's ready to take down my ATF-55 with her Skilsaw as soon as we win our base and get the guide.

Jeeze, Chris! What's the old saying? "Give a man an inch and he'll buy the adjoining property"? Well, maybe I slightly altered the text, but who wants an inch? Come to think of it, if it was wide enough and long enough, and inch *thick* might be OK. :D

I have a ??? Am I wrong in assuming that this thread should actually be listed under "FreeStuff Drawings"? I'm constantly looking at the Forum but it doesn't seem to be updated much. If I'm wrong, let me know where I'm supposed to look for free stuff...I like to win too, but then I'm already a winner with just being a member here. :D

Aaron Koehl
06-04-2004, 3:38 PM
Greg,

FreeStuff drawings stay in the General Woodworking Forum until the drawings are complete, at which time they are moved to the FreeStuff Forum for archival/reference.

We do random drawings for registered members--if you use the View New Posts feature, you will be sure not to miss a beat.

If you still have an excess of rough walnut up there, throw in some and we'll trade for supper or maybe even paaaay for the walnut. :D

Hey, when are we going to get a review from someone?

If I win, I promise a review within a week of obtaining the tool. Maybe we should limit the rest of the draws to people who promise to do a speedy review.

I am particularly interested to see a comparative review between this and a Festool circular saw with a guide. This is something that I have been asking someone to do for at leat two months and, so far, there has been no response.

The Festool is a great system and the EZsmart is a great guide.
If you combine the benefits of both, You have the Best system.

Dino, I expect that you are correct, but I am still waiting for a comparison of the two INDEPENDENT systems from someone other than you.

Keeeeripes! "Crap" ain't got nuthin' to do with it! If I didn't think so before, I do know NOW that this thing is rigged!!! Chris has obviously promised Aaron a boatload of seashells or something, so his name miraculously "appeared". Save your money on the lotto tickets, guys! Take it from the Bad Luck Poster Boy: Something is afoul here! The worst part is, unless the SG Base comes with extremely detailed pictures, diagrams and specific measurements, ole' San Jose there will probably end up putting it on backwards! :D

OK, enough of the serious stuff. Congrats on the "win"! Enjoy the base. It's really a neat item and you make find yourself wanting the whole system!

Aaron, don't mind my "rantings"! I'm sure the drawing are completely legit, random and above-board. :) It's just that the San Jose Kid already HAS more toys than he know what to do with! That's OK. I'm sure he "deserves" it. :) (BTW, if you get any of those shells with that pretty turquoise tint to them, could you send them my way? :D )

I must admit, I never win anything. The best contest for SOMEONE ELSE to enter is one that I'm entered in!!! (It dramatically increases the other entrants' odds to win.) I'm glad I've been distracted lately--I almost BOUGHT one of these!!! Now I'll have to buy the rest of the system....

Many thanks to Dino and SMC.

Sure, that software (DJGPP?) that let you do 32-bit applications under DOS. A fine contribution it was!

Yes, we are fortunate to have him as a member of the 'Creek-
He ported the GNU compiler to Wintel, and now develops the compiler at RedHat.
I used the port quite a bit in my early days--very nice.

Yes, I'm the DJGPP guy :-) http://www.delorie.com/

Also do woodworking with the Guild of New Hampshire Woodworkers (plus I'm their webmaster: www.gnhw.org) and the Granite State Woodturners.

And now this bonus :-)

We seem to have quite a number of software/woodworking crossovers. I work for AdaCore, the maintainers of the GNU Ada compiler (and worked for Alsys a long time ago, who also did a DOS extender as part of their second compiler, around the same time as Hummingbird did their extender).

This is only the second thing I've won in 30 years. Granted, not quite as nice as the red Datsun 260Z 2+2 I won back in '76, but, hey, I'll take it. Thanks! :)

All you lucky winners, keep me posted about the use of this new tool and how it works. :)I have another post asking about it. If you would post there, I'd appreciate the reviews!!!:D

Who were the last 4 winners?

I'm sure it's not me, since I never win drawings, raffles, lotteries and the like, but it'd be nice to see all the names.

[Edit: I saw the list in Aaron's first post, but it stopped at June 26. I apparently skipped right over the part wheree Aaron said "through the last Saturday in June". My bad!]

Sam, go to the first page of this thread. Aaron keeps a running account of all winners at the end of his first post.

'Ya know...I'm not even sure *why* in the heck I even bother looking at this thread! I should KNOW better! Well, at least I still retain the position as poster boy for the "Bad Luck Club"! :D Hey, congrats to ALL the winners! It's really a fine base and the whole system is pretty kick-butt, as well! :)

So... John. You have the base or the whole system? And you were trying to steal another one from us deserving folks? That's almost as bad as a couple of the guys who *did* win! Jeeze! You should automatically be "un-entered" in these drawings. :D How come you get to be the poster boy? Just because you're more photogenic or what? :o Inquiring minds want to know. :p

David

Dave, I've got the whole she-bang. It's really a SUPER system! I have yet to setup the table, though, as other projects have taken priority, though I am going to try and get the lumber prepped for it this weekend and assemble the thing. I've got another mini-project coming up, which will require cutting down sheet goods, so it'll come in real handy for that. My opinion on the system, thus far? Quite simply, if a guy already has a good circular saw, (in my case, I have three!), then this system is for you! I had considered the Festool system for a long time, but just couldn't justify it, because I already had these other saws available.

At any rate, the SG-1 really rocks! The folks winning the systems for the FPP SG-1 auction, I'm sure will attest to this! :) Believe me, if I already didn't have the system, I'd be bidding on the ones being donated by Dino right now!

David Rose

John, when you get it all assembled and give it a trial run please post a 10 page review. :D I have a good circular saw with a pretty decent blade even. ...and no table saw... So I am a prime candidate.

Any offers? :)

David

John,

The table top is pretty cool. Built it pretty quickly a couple of weeks back. Haven't had the chance to actually use it, but it looks just about right to me.
