I had a request to make a communion cup. I'm using walnut and cherry, what finish would be safe to use for this project?

I would use several coats of exterior grade Poly. I would Steel wool, (0000) between coats. Then buffed. This is food safe according to Bob Flexner in his book, Understanding wood finishing. Another option would be epoxy. In any case, Good Luck! :)

A few years ago I made some wooden mugs for my hunting buddies and myself. I put on several coats of spar poly. The finish has held up to several years of use with soda pop, water and assorted "adult beverages". Once fully cured the finish will be completely non-toxic.

I've always used Envirotex (http://www.eti-usa.com/consum/envtex/envlite.htm) for such things.

The goal is to keep the wood tannins out of the booze, and visa-versa

You've probably already chosen something, but next time you might consider water-based Oxford 9000 Super-Clear Polyurethane

I just used this on a table top and I am impressed.
