I spent some time in the shop last night and tonight and finished these two bowls. The first is birch, 7.25 x 2 inches, no finish added. The second is white oak, 5 x .875 inches, poly finish. I spent more time sanding these than I did on my first. The result was enough to convince me on sanding. A question for the wise ones. What are the cross grain rays on the white oak?

Nice bowls. The rays in the oak are medullary rays which are commonly seen in quartersawn oak. It gives the bowl a very "arts and crafts" feel.

John - nice work! Both are really good looking bowls! Sanding is one of those things - you either hate it or tolerate it but there is no arguing that sanding makes a world of difference in the finished product!

Keep up the good work!

Both are looking good. I agree with Steve that sanding is something I hate sanding but must be tolerated. leave u all

John,
I made a couple white oak bowls last weekend and they do need sanding. Those end grain pores really stand out.
