Here is a play on the slimline pen - a 30-06 cartridge as the lower blank with mesquite for the upper; I used a friction polish on the mesquite vs. CA, as I think on this pen having the natural oils from your hand would accent the darker mesquite as time passes. The USMC logo is laser engraved into the cartridge, and is coated with a gloss clear to prevent tarnishing.

For those folks who are going to look at this close-up: yes, the upper barrel is thinner than the lower on purpose. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to see "Winchester" and "30-06" from the top of the cartridge.

Comments, etc. are welcome!

Mesquite and brass seem like a good combination -just don't leave it in your pocket going to the airport.

Nice pen Michael and I like the cartridge. This is just my opinion though it looks strange with the thinner upper barrel. I do not think being able to read that set of details is really necessary. I think it detracts from the heavy duty look of the pen. Like I said it is only my 2 cents worth.

That's fair - so let me take a poll, as I can always change it: thin to see the cartridge markings, or fat / uniform to the diameter of the cartridge? I'd appreciate your thoughts!

Michael that is a great looking pen. Myself I would make the pen uniform top to bottom.

Michael - I like the combination but also would vote for a uniform pen diameter.

Great combination! I would also have to go with the uniform size. Since I carry a pen in my shirt pocket it seems like it would snag coming out.

OK, thicker is in. Give me a few minutes, and let's see what happens.
