Greetings:

Here's a couple of pics of a mesquite piece that received a third place at the November Gulf Coast Woodturner's Assoc meeting today.

The original piece of wood had long wings on two sides making the over lenth nearly three feet. A club member suggested "remove the wings, turn it and don't be afraid of negative space."

Hummm, what does that mean in turning language? The piece is 10" in diameter and 5" tall.

Congrats on your ribbon! Quite the bowl! Beautiful wood and finish!

Negative space is a new one to me - must be some sort of wood anti-matter or something! I'd stay away from that stuff! ;)

Interesting piece. Negative space is where there is nothing but air. If you look at my last open stave ribbon form you can see through and around it a lot of places. Those places are the negative space. Or look at one of the Osolnik candle sticks and then look beside it. That is the negative space (beside it).
