A friend from Seattle, Matt Kramer brought me some spaulted maple on a resent visit. This piece needed something to bring out the character of the wood so I tried a dye job. It is a good grade of food coloring which gives a brilliant color.

That is really great job. Did you use any other finish than the Dye?

Very impressive Bob! Love the way the color enhances the curl! I am also curious as to what other steps you took to finish this! Seriously - love the color!

Boy did the dye work on that one. Really brought out the curl on it.

Beautiful!!!

I am with Steve on this, tell us more. Unless of course you are afraid we will do the same thing, because I know I will.

I appreciate the comments. The pot is about 4” the piece 6” overall. I guess I use food coloring mostly because I’m cheep. There are however some tricks. First I get the coloring from Michael’s in the cake decorating dept. The colors are deeper and more vibrant than the sort you find in most grocery stores. You have to do a through sanding job before you apply the color. I dampen the piece several times and sand so that the color has little grain to raise when applied. I sand lightly with 1200 before applying a mixture of 50-50 Deft and lacquer thinner. This consistency soaks in and gives a good base for the four or five coats of spray Deft. Final sanding is about 2400. I don’t use wax as I find it collects dust and leaves finger prints.
