is the sharpening thing the right one to get?

is there a cheaper place to get the sharpening set?

I have one of Dave's handles for a 1/2" bowl gouge that I received as a gift. While I appreciate the thought behind the gift I would have gone for the 5/8" gouge and I'd turn my own wooden handle to my own specs. Save the $35+shipping.

Penn state has their own version of the Wolverine system. Item #LCGRIND4. I don't own it and I'm not making a recommendation, just FYI.

You want a 1/2" gouge and a handle for a 3/8" gouge? That does not compute.

You're getting a Wolverine grinding jig? I thought you didn't have a bench grinder, Curtis - you were talking about hand sharpening. Maybe I missed that message...

You'll like the Thompson, though. The last tool I bought, I turned my own handle - I know you have the skill to do that too, if you want to direct the handle money elsewhere.

Curtis you will like the 1/2" V flute gouge. They last a long time between sharpening. I don't understand why you want a 1/2" gouge and a handle for a 3/8". I will say Dave Peebles handles are great and easy/comfortable to work with. I turn my own handles to but wanted to try these and am glad I did. Curtis you need to buy the grinding jig and the vari-grind jig for bowl gouges.

The 1/2" Thompson in the Peebles handle will be a great combination. I have it and I love it. The Oneway Wolverine is the way to go, it's the most widely used and if you got to someone else's shop or take a class some where away from home the wolverine setup is what you will most likely encounter for sharpening so you only need to take your vari-grind jig with you. Yes, there are other systems that mimic the wolverine and they may be cheaper and they may work as well since they are clones but.........

Hi Curtis, get the Wolverine sharpening set, it is the best as the knockoffs are flimsy I'm told by some that used them, you do need to be able to sharpen well or no tool will cut well for you.
The handles are nice, but I made my own as I found the aluminium ones too light for me, made the tool feel very unbalanced, so I drilled through 1" steel rod and have 2 different sizes in the ends, so I can use them with more than one size tool, I used the reinforced water-pump high-pressure hose as a cover, the mass of the handle dampens well, anyway I like them ;-)).
