Self-centering dowel jigs

I do a lot of dowelling of 3 inch wide end joints....is there a jig that has its drill holes spaced at a wider position instead of a narrow locked position which is ok for narrow 1 x 2 or 3 stock? Or does it really matter? Is there an optimum spacing of dowels in direct proportion to stock width?
