At the request of my wife, I started building two bowls for her mother and my mother as a gift. Here is the first one finished (the other one is half way in the glue-up). It is cherry and Jatoba and made using the method of bowl-from-a-board, out of one square board. It's 8.5" wide and just over 5" tall. I pushed the method to get 5 layers out of it. The walls were real thin in the blank. The final thickness is about 3/16".

Nice looking segments. I wouldn't have guessed the contrast to be so great between those 2 woods ... that is why I try not to "guess" to much!

Very nice segmented. What did you use for a finish?

Interesting design Mreza! Good contrasting wood colors! Nice form! Sure looks thin! I am sure it will make for a great gift! Looking forward to seeing the next one!

Very nice looking piece, Mreza! I like the contrast, and the form. I like the thickness, too; 3/16 IMHO is right between too bulky and too thin; very functional. Very nice work. I can't wait to see your next piece.

thanks for the comments.
The finish is a simple coat of mineral oil. In the past I used tung oil a few times but didn't like the smell it had afterwards.

Here is the second bowl of the pair of Jatoba/Cherry bowls I made for my mother and mother in-law.
As said before, made using the method of bowl-from-a board i.e. starting with a board about 1" thick and 8.5" wide. The bowls are just over 5" tall, finished with mineral oil.

One has to be careful to get the lines converge right at the center of the bowl.
