I went to my local library for ideas / projects revolving around creating your own with different router bits. There were none available that I could see and I am hoping you guys may have some resources or ideas for me.

I really am looking for ideas on different shapes and ways to put different parts of wood that would have been shaped by a router together to make a "fancy" frame. Pretty much like ideas for creating different types of molding.

Hopefully that all makes sense!

Go to ebay and do a search for antique wood picture frames and another search for vintage wood picture frames. Try the same search at Google images.

I was looking to learn about the different techniques and router bits I should be using to design one though.

I made this diploma frame for my brother earlier this year. It might give you some ideas.

This picture frame router bit set looks interesting:

I don't own it, but it says it comes with a DVD and profile guide, which might give you inspiration for what you want to do.

I got that and the combinations may be limitless. But I've only used 2 so far.

Adam, Woodsmith No. 60 (December 1988) does exactly what you described. It gives details for making 10 different and attractive picture frame moldings. some made with multiple cuts of a single strip of wood, and some built up of two or more shapes. Some are what I'd call "fancy". The router bits required are standard shapes, nothing special.

That issue of Woodsmith also has plans for a tablesaw jig for cutting the finished moldings to matching miters and lengths. It's easy to build and works well. I made one for my contractors saw back in '88 or '89 and recently made another one to fit my Sawstop.

I assume you can still get a copy of that issue from Woodsmith. PM me if it's not available and I'll scan it for you.

Adam,
I bought the 6 piece Freud frame making (from Peachtree Woodworking) set at a woodworking show last year. I used it making a variety of frames last spring and it is very useful and the combinations are limitless. I did not ge tthe DVD but the written "how to" sheet is very clearly written with pictures.
