I commented earlier that I sharpen my carving tools on a "sharpening disk" that I use on my lathe. I put together a tutorial (http://www.mikes-woodwork.com/SharpeningDisk.htm)on my web site on how to make one of those sharpening disks. It's not a tutorial on how to use the disk, but you should be able to figure it out by looking at the last few pictures.

If you make one, I'd appreciate hearing how it works for you.

I saw your earlier comment about a "sharpening disk" and decided that was the way to go rather than laying out the cash for a sharpening system. I used 3/4" plywood and made it a little too large for a sheet of sandpaper. I plan to correct that but it could be used as is. I cut a strip from a piece of 6/7 ounce leather and glued it on back side out. My scarfed joint could be better, as I have a bump when using the disk, but I am very pleased with it. I bought compound from Lowe's. I have run out of things to sharpen in the shop :p.

Thanks for the great idea, Mike. BTW I looked at your website and all I can say is, WOW.
